Middlesex Metro Bank Cup at Radlett CC Loss Report

COSTLY MISTAKES LEAD TO ANOTHER HEAVY DEFEAT

Middlesex recorded their first win of the Metro Bank One Day Cup competition with an emphatic 134 run win over a poorly performing Notts at Radlett today.

Despite Radlett's reputation as a high scoring ground, Notts surprised all the locals by inserting Middlesex. Paterson returned to the Eleven in place of Pettman.

Hutton (Salter's Field End) and Paterson opened the bowling. Paterson's first three deliveries were hit for four by Stoneman, 13 off the second over. Stoneman hoisted Hutton for six over long off in the third over. In the 7th over, Hutton knocked back Stoneman's (35 off 27 balls) off stump, 40 for 1. James bowled the last over of the powerplay, Robson hit him for four and then next ball, a six over square leg. Middlesex 68 for 1 after 10 overs.

In the 11th over, Robson (17) played-on to Hutton, 70 for 2. In 15th over, Cracknell lofted Hutton for six over extra cover. Patterson-White replaced James in the 16th over and had Cracknell (35) caught behind, Cracknell edging the ball onto his pads the ball ballooning to the diving Schadendorf behind the stumps, 95 for 3 off 16 overs. Hutton's opening spell was 8-1-35-2, he bizarrely never bowled again. James immediately switched ends and a straight driven four by Higgins saw Middlesex to 100 in the 17th over. In the following over, Davies hit Patterson-White for a straight six. In the 19th over, Higgins hit James for 6 over long on. Loten replaced James for the 23rd over and dismissed Davies with his 6th ball caught at Harrison at cover for 19, 136 for 4.

Andersson hit Loten for successive leg side sixes in the 27th over and in the same over he was dropped on 18 by Paterson at third man, an easy chance. This was the turning point of the match with Andersson going on to score his maiden hundred and add 129 in with Higgins 13 overs as Notts completely lost their way in the middle overs. Wide after wide were bowled, totalling 22 in the innings and the ground fielding was once again rather scruffy. Both Higgins and Andersson making List A best scores. The Notts team very quiet in the field the heads clearly dropping. Never a good sign.

Higgins hit Loten for 6 over mid-wicket in the 29th over, 16 off the over. Harrison was given a bowl from the Pavilion End in the 30th over with Higgins sweeping him for six over square leg, 13 off the over. Loten’s first four overs went for 40. A straight driven boundary off the returning Paterson saw Higgins to his 50 off 39 balls and Middlesex passed 200 in the 31st over. Harrison went for three boundaries and 14 runs in his second over. James replaced Harrison for the 35th over but could not stem the runs, 12 off the over. Patterson-White came on from the Salter s Field End as Middlesex reached 250 in the 35th over. James was bowling a succession of wides but Higgins (88 off 58 balls, 10x4, 3x6) ballistic innings finally ended when he skied James to Hameed at mid-off. 265 for 5 off 36 overs. Loten returned for the 37th over and removed Simpson for a 2-ball duck caught by Martindale at cover, 266 for 6. Andersson reached his 50 off 45 balls with a single off Patterson-White in the 38th over. Patterson-White (10 0 57 1) bowled his last over with 10 overs remaining. Patterson-White along with Hutton the only two Notts bowlers who came out of today’s carnage with any credit Middlesex 283 for 6 off 40 overs.

A single for Andersson off saw Middlesex 300 in the 43rd over. Paterson replaced Loten (8 0 61 2) for the 45th over. Hollman hit two boundaries off expensive Harrison (5 0 47 0) in the 46th over. Hollman (35) skied Paterson to Patterson-White at extra cover, 325 for 7 in the 47th over. De Caires was dropped on 1 by Hutton at short third man off Paterson (9 0 77 1). James bowled the 48th over with Patterson-White catching de Caires (2) in the covers, 338 for 8. Middlesex reached 350 in the 49th over bowled by Paterson (9-0-77-1). Andersson reached his 100 off 80 balls with consecutive boundaries and a two off James (10 0 82 3) but he fell next ball caught on the covers ropes by Harrison, 363 for 9. Andersson (100 off 81 balls, 10x4, 2x6), like Foakes and Steel two days before, inflicted maximal damage on Notts after an easy chance had been dropped in the field. Bamber (5) was run out off the last ball going for 2 to Montgomery at deep cover. Middlesex 365 all out off 50 overs. Kaushal 1 not out. Middlesex well in command against a Notts batting line-up which did not contain any power hitters. The decision to insert Middlesex had backfired big time.

Kaushal (Pavilion End) and Bamber opened the bowling. Martindale hit consecutive boundaries off Bamber in the 2nd over. Martindale (11), fell in the 4th over, lofted Bamber straight to Davies at mid-on, 18 for 1.

James (7) fell in the 9th over to a brilliant one-hand catch by Stoneman at mid-wicket off Kushal (8-0-45-1), 37 for 2. The second consecutive Notts batsmen to get out attempting to loft the ball over the field. Slater (25) fell to the last delivery of the powerplay caught by Simpson standing up to Bamber, 51 for 3 after 10 overs. The game was well and truly over.

The struggling Hameed (15) lost his middle stump to Bamber (7-1-32-3), 60 for 4 after 12 overs. Higgins (10-1-40-3) came on from the Pavilion End in the 13th over and after his superb innings with the bat, he proved to be Middlesex’s best man with the ball.

Middlesex then missed two chances. Patterson-White was dropped on 6 by Simpson off Andersson and Montgomery was put down on 15 by Higgins at backward point off Andersson (3-0-20-0). Neither proved to be that costly with Patterson-White (8) falling to catch at mid-off by Davies off Higgins, 88 for 5. Patterson-White who has bowled well in the last two games is still struggling with the bat.

Notts reached 100 in the 20th over bowled by Andersson with Schadendorf hitting two shortish deliveries for 4 and 6 in an over costing 13 runs. It had taken the Notts 20 overs into their innings for one of their batsman to successfully execute a shot that hit over the heads of the fielders. This underlined the weakness of the Notts batting line-up for this format of cricket. Unfortunately, Schadendorf (19) fell to catch behind the wicket by Simpson standing up to Hutton, 123 for 6 after 23 overs.

In the 25th over, Montgomery (40 off 45 balls, 4x4) was caught at backward point by de Caries off Higgins, 130 for 7. Montgomery the one Notts batter in the competition that has scored runs consistently. Harrison hit Higgins (10 1 43 3) for 6 over mid-wicket in the 31st over. Robson and de Caries came on for the 33rd and 34th overs respectively. Against their relatively innocuous spin, Harrison (41 off 51 balls, 4x4) and Loten (44 off 40 balls, 4x4, 2x6) shared a partnership of 74 in 13 overs to give the Notts total a smidgen of respectability.

Loten hit de Caries (3-0-23-0) for successive boundaries in the 36th over. Loten smashed a full toss from Robson for 6 over square leg but was in dismissed in the same over caught behind edging a cut shot, 204 for 8 after 37 overs. The end was nigh.

Harrison was dropped on 39 by Stoneman off Robson in the 39th over. Hutton was caught on the square leg ropes by Andersson off Hollman (5-0-41-1), 223 for 9. Paterson hit Hollman for 6 just clearing the fielder at long on. Next ball, Harrison was the last man to fall caught at long on by Cracknell off Robson (4.1-0-23-2). Notts 231 all out off 40.1 overs had lost by the massive margin of 134 runs against a team who had previously not won a game. The Director of Cricket being in attendance on the compact ground with short square boundaries, in front of crowd of around 1,500.

Notts now head to Canterbury on Thursday with Fateh Singh and Sammy King surely given a chance to impress. Today’s quite pathetic display underlined the limitations of a line-up not suited to limited overs cricket, this despite them being able to call on their two leaders red ball bowlers (Hutton and Paterson) and their current red-ball openers (Slater and Hameed) much thought needs to put into next year’s campaign. Two overseas players is a must, the members deserve to see the most competitive side possible in the field. MAG

I restrained myself for nearly 48 hours after the Surrey debacle from pointing out that our bowling is considerably stronger than our batting and our history chasing gettable totals and from nailed on winning positions is patchy to put it at its very very mildest and yet we won the toss and elected to chase. I see we have done it again today because we are anxious to seize the momentum by bowling against Stoneman who only averages about 193 against us at a Halesian strike rate.

  2. Thanks be. I claim the credit for that along with the Middlesex commentator on the stream who could not have done it better.

  4. At the interval
Never been to Raddy - but assume it’s a very small outfield as this is one huge ask for this Notts batting line up of pretty pedestrian white ball players
Just hope we can give it a real good go and see where we end up chasing that score

  5. Well done Notts Hierarchy
Other Counties are taking this competition seriously, as so they should, and actually trying to win it, or at least get to the final which is held at our own place.
Do we just not consider A) drafting in an overseas player as some clubs have done to bolster the ranks and/or B) Utilising the new rule and picking a player not currently playing in the Hindred ?

In some recent weeks, we have been a total embarrassment at times
At any other club, there would be pressure on the Head Coach and Director of Cricket, but not at this club, for the obvious reasons and all their incompetence, like the singing of the Rolling Stone, will be just ignored, washed over and forgotten about
It must be absolutely fantastic to obtain a high salaried, prestigious role with an organisation with no accountability for your mistakes whatsoever
It’s 99-5 just now and I just hope we can somehow salvage some respectability from today.

NOW 140-7 off 27 - a pretty hopeless task with NOTTS presumably just going through the motion .
Prospect of reaching the later stages of the Metro Cup seem lost- not worked out the exact maths .
So we have had a very average Blast comp and now a disappointing 50 over run on top of a below par County Championship .
So what’s to be done ?
We seem very short of a high quality match winner in any competition .
Has the loss of Ducket unbalanced the side to such an extent ?
How we would now like to have young Evison in the NOTTS 11 !

  7. Very well done to Calvin and Tom Loten for providing some respectability to a scorecard that was looking somewhat dire
Obviously, we had no hope whatsoever in chasing that score down, but thankfully to that partnership it was not a complete disaster of a performance so well done to those lads indeed

  8. Nice to jake the peg
Turning out for the Welsh firemen
Bizarrely that he's fit to play for them but
For most of this season he's been injured
I'm sure it as nothing to do with the money

  10. As it looks'& we don't qualify in the one day cup is it right we won't have any cricket for over two weeks until the country championship resumes

  11. Realistically , Notts were under the cosh early on , as Stoneman aided by a missed catch behind the stumps laid the platform, as Middlesex got off to a bit of a flyer.
Notts bowling can only be described as abysmal, apart from Hutton and LPW in helpful conditions particularly for the seamers.
As for the batting , we no longer have a Budinger to get us quickly out of the blocks, so chasing that score, we were always going to be behind the rate.
This was an extremely poor performance on the back of two " home" defeats.
The club could save a shed load of money, by dispensing with the useless DOC, and half of the plethora of coaches, shrinks, analysts etc, and it wouldn't make a iota of difference to the results.
You never know, they could even improve.

    1. Joel and Ethan are absolutely spot on with their observations
Not sure I would have given Lord Sol Budinger a new deal, but compared to Ben Martindale it’s a no brainer surely
Guess the Lord wanted more opportunities, however he has ironically lost his place in the Foxes 🦊 side so with hindsight who knows
Ben is still young and learning so very good luck to him. Let’s just hope he can make the grade over the next 3 years of his contract

As ever in cricket , you win some , you lose some . This Metro Cup comp is just a sideshow in the scheme of things and the winner this season will be forgotten within a week of the TB final . But the Comp is giving good opportunity to Second 11 players to shine . It’s invaluable experience which can shape careers . Some top performers in the Seconds may come to realise the step up to the First 11 is a step too far? . It’s vital to keep the 50 over Comp alive . It’s being pretty well supported by decent proper cricket fans who can sit quietly and watch and absorb whats going on in the middle- without awful rap music being blasted out at the end of every over!?
