At 15:52 today Notts beat Lancashire by 9 wickets with 31.2 overs to spare.
On another sunny today, Notts struggled for an early breakthrough this morning with Hurst and Hartley seeing off Pennington (Radcliffe Road End) and Stone, Harley hitting Stone for successive fours in the 37th over which saw him replaced by Paterson. Harrison was introduced in the 42nd over. In the 44th over, Hurst hit Harrison for six over mid-wicket. A four for Hurst through mid-wicket brought up the 100 stand for the 7th wicket in 162 balls. Hameed was setting some funky fields with four close off-side fielders in a line in front of left-hander Hartley when the seamers were bowling; batting becoming very easy as the ball was getting older. James replaced Paterson from the Pavilion End for the 51st over. Hurst reached his 50 off 87 balls with a single off Harrison in the 52nd over. Lancashire took the lead in the 54th over with Hartley reaching his 50 with a single off Harrison. James made the vital breakthrough when he had Hartley (50 off 100 overs; 7x4) caught by Harrison going to his right at second slip. The 7th wicket stand was worth 116 runs in 32 overs; 177-7 in the 55th over. Pennington replaced Harrison for the 60th over and with his fourth delivery had Bailey leg before wicket beaten for pace for 10; 190 for 8. There was long stoppage for Hurst to receive treatment having been hit on the hand by James. Lancashire were 198 for 8 off 61 overs at lunch with Hurst on 64 and Williams on 0.
Pennington and Stone bowled after lunch with the Lancashire 200 coming up in the 63rd over, but they could not make a further incision. Harrison returned for the 68th over and immediately took a wicket having Williams (8) lbw, 224 for 9. With the field of a single slip and the rest on the boundary for the first four balls of every over that he faced, the young stumper Hurst hit Stone for six over square leg into the Fox Road and then hit the following ball for a legside four in the 69th over. Notts made a double bowling change with Pennington and James coming back for the 70th and 71st overs respectively. Hurst hoisted James for six over mid-wicket. Hurst reached his ton off 148 balls in the grandest manner with six over square leg off James. Harrison came back on for the 73rd over and bowled a maiden as Hurst was finding the leg-spinner a lot more of challenge to hoist away than either Stone and James. Paterson returned for the following over. Hurst (104 off 158 balls, 10x4, 4x6) holed out to Slater on the mid-wicket ropes off Harrison. A fine effort from Hurst, rescuing Lancashire from a pitiful 61-6. Lancashire 252 run out off 74.3 overs. Mahmood 4 not out having faced quite comfortably 23 balls. Two wickets apiece for Paterson, James and Harrison with Pennington returning figures of 19-6-61-4 on the featherbed pitch.
Notts needed 81 to win off 50 overs. Bailey and Balderson shared the new ball. Slater hit two boundaries off Balderson in the 4th over; 20-0. Slater going for his shots then found the ropes twice more off Bailey in fifth over. Mahmood came on for the 6th over. In the 8th over, Slater (31 off 32 balls, 6x4) was caught behind via a thin edge off Mahmood, 44 for 1. Williams came on for the 9th over. Young took 6 runs off the 10th over bowled by Mahmood Wells came on for the 13th over and conceded nine with boundaries for Young and Hameed. Notts 66-1 and with only 15 more runs required tea was delayed. Bailey came back bowling spin and it was fitting that that a swept single by Hameed off Wells saw Notts to victory. They finished on 81-1 off 18.4 overs with Hameed on 24 and Young on 22. They took 22 points from the fixture, their first win since their 2-wicket triumph over Middlesex in the last game of 2023. Notts jumped up to fourth in the table with Lancashire in bottom place having lost three of their five opening matches. Hampshire arrive at Trent Bridge in 4 days’ time as Notts look to carry on their winning momentum. MAG
247 NOT OUT HAMEED NOT BHAD - IF YOU KNOW, YOU'LL GET IT
Lancashire closed the third day still 72 runs behind Notts with four second innings wickets still standing after an eventful day at sunny Trent Bridge.
Notts started the day on 279 for 7, 52 behind Lancashire and incredibly the overnight pair Hameed and Stone batted throughout the morning session adding 115 off 31 overs without being parted. Balderson and Bailey opened the bowling on a glorious day as Stone dominated the early phases, playing a number of pleasing drives. A boundary for Stone in the 94th over off Balderson took Notts to the second batting point. For the 97th and 98th overs Williams and Mahmood came on. Hameed reached 150 in 278 baΔΊls with a single off Mahmood in the 100th over. Balderson returned for the 103rd over and dropped Stone off his own bowling when on 34. Later in the same over a quick single for Stone to mid-on saw Notts take the lead. Hartley came on for the 108th over. A legside single for Hameed off Hartley took Notts to 350 off the second delivery of the 110th over. Notts 351 for 7 after 110 overs. Wells came on for the 111th over. Stone got to his 50 off 88 balls with a single off HaΕtley in the 112th over. The century partnership between Hameed and Stone (off 164 balls) was achieved by cover driven boundary by Stone off Hartley. A two for Stone of Wells took him passed his previous career best of 60 for Northants v Kent at Wantage Road in 2016. Bailey came on bowling off breaks in the 118th over to enable Hartley to switch ends. Notts 394 for 7 off 120 overs at the interval with Hameed on 183 and Stone on 68. The whole game dynamic was changing.
Notts batted throughout the afternoon session as Hameed and the Notts tail ground Lancashire into the dirt. An even well contested and hard-fought match was slowly going in Notts’ direction. The fielding got increasingly sloppy and the visitors heads started to visibly droop in the baking sun. Notts reached 400 in the 122nd over. The 150 Hameed/Stone partnership was achieved in 263 balls with a single for Hameed off Bailey in the 131st over. A four through point by Hameed off Bailey took him past his career best score (196 – Notts v Derbyshire at Derby in 2002) in the 133rd over. Hameed got an offside single off Hartley to take him to 200 off 368 balls. Stone (90 off 168 balls, 15x4) was finally dismissed losing his off stump to Tom Bailey, 438 for 8 off 135 overs. The eighth wicket had added 163 in 48 overs, a record for the fixture beat the 119 partnership by Paul Franks and Andre Adams at Trent Bridge in 2011. Stone clearly a highly proficient number nine. Pennington was bowled Hartley for 0, 459 for 9 off 140 overs. To rub salt into Lancashire the wounds the last wicket added 44 in 14 overs, the frustration being built up was clearly influential in Lancashire’s subsequent post tea collapse.
Hameed was dropped on 244 by Jennings on the mid-wicket ropes of Mahmood. Notts reached 500 in the 153rd over when Hameed got a single off Mahmood. Paterson was bowled by Wells for 18. Notts 503 all out off 153.4 overs with Hameed 247 not out. The monumental innings lasted 10 hours 22 minutes and contained 25 fours in the 459-ball knock. This was the highest score for a Notts batsman to carry his bat beating Charlie Harris 239 not out versus Hampshire at Trent Bridge in 1950 and 11th highest in the county championship. It was first time that a Notts batsman had carried out his bat since Alex Hales (106 not out) versus Warwickshire at Edgbaston in 2011. Notts led by 172 runs after the first innings. Three Lancashire bowlers conceded three figures, Balderson who bowled so well yesterday finished 4-102. Tea was taken between the innings.
Stone (Pavilion End) and Pennington shared the new ball and generated pace and bounce on the soporific deck. In the 8th over, Wells (12) was well caught by Young diving to his left at third slip off Pennington, 19 for 1. Four balls later, Bohannon (0) edged a lifting delivery from the cock-a-hoop Pennington with Clarke taking the catch, 19 for 2. Paterson replaced Stone in the 11th over. Bell (5) became Pennington's third victim when he was caught at second slip by Harrison, 33 for 3 in the 12th over. Jennings (17), with bat well away from his body, drove at Paterson with the ball flying to Tom Moores at first slip who took the catch at second attempt. Parrying the initial chance which was above his head and catch the rebound behind him , 37 for 4 in the 13th over. Balderson surprisingly came in at six rather than three. Bruce was dropped on 0 a very difficult caught and bowled chance to Paterson diving to his right. Bruce straight drove Pennington for two boundaries in the 15th over, in an over which went for ten. James replaced Pennington (8 4 25 3) for the 18th over. Bruce (15) gloved a vicious lifter from James and was caught by Clarke, 61 for 5 in the 22nd over. In the following over, Balderson (4) was caught at third slip by Young off Paterson, 61 for 6 in the 23rd over. After an eight over spell Paterson made way for the returning Stone. Hartley hit Stone for consecutive boundaries. Harrison came from the Radcliffe Road End for the following over. In the last over of the day a confident leg before shout by Stone against Hurst was turned down and then the 20-year-old right hander was almost bowled by one that kept low. The sixth wicket pair of Hurst (15 not out) and Hartley (18 not out) have so far added 39 in 8.4 overs. Lancashire closing on 100 for 6 off 31 overs with all six batsmen falling to catches behind the wicket with all the Notts seam quartet bowling impressively. MAG
Lancashire lead by 52 runs with Notts still having three first innings wickets standing. A real captain innings of 137 not out (off 246 balls, 16x4) by Haseeb Hameed was the glue that held the innings together after they slipped to 105 for 4 in reply to Lancashire’s 331 all out. He found useful allies in Haynes, James and Harrison, with Notts losing two wickets late on against the second new ball. Hameed’s ton was the his first in championship cricket since his 115 against Durham in the last game of 2022. It was also his first three figure score in First Division cricket since his twin hundreds for Lancashire against Yorkshire at Old Trafford way back in August 2016.
Stone (Pavilion End) and Pennington opened the bowling first thing this morning under a cloudless sky with Lancashire adding a further 25 runs to their overnight score, mainly off Bailey’s bat. In the 99th over, Williams was caught at second slip by Harrison off Stone, 317 for 9. In his next over Stone had Mahmood (2) caught in at extra cover by Hameed. Lancashire 331 all out off 100.2 overs with Bailey undefeated on 31. Stone (3 for 56) and Pennington (3 for 68) leading the Notts attack.
Bailey (Pavilion End) and Mahmood shared the new ball. In the sixth over, Slater (4) edged Mahmood straight to Bell at third slip, 18 for 1. With the score on 36 for 1 off 11 overs, Balderson replaced Mahmood from the Radcliffe Road End. Will Williams came on from the Pavilion End in the following over and with his second delivery Young on 17 was dropped by Bruce at second slip. In the same over a straight driven boundary by Hameed took Notts passed 50. In the 19th over, Young (27), shouldering arms to a delivery from Williams which jagged back in, had his middle stump knocked back, 59 for 2. Notts reached lunch on 64 for 2 off 22 overs with Hameed on 28 and Clarke on 2. An intriguing morning with Lancashire bowling as well as their Notts counterparts, runs had to be earned.
Bailey and Mahmood were reunited after lunch but they failed to make the breakthrough. Balderson replaced Mahmood and within his first over of his new spell a two for Clarke took Notts to 100 in the 30th over. Williams bowled the following over and a single for Hameed took him to a well-constructed and patient 50 off 99 balls. Clarke (15) was caught behind by Hurst off Balderson, 102 for 3 off 32 overs. Moores (1) was out in a very sadly predictable fashion caught behind by Hurst off Balderson swishing outside off stump with no foot movement, 104 for 4. He is not a First Division county championship number five batsman. Mahmood and Bailey came back for the 41st and 42nd overs respectively. Hartley was finally given a bowl for the 46th over with a single for Hameed bringing up the Notts 150. Hartley was to remain without a wicket all day, despite bowling 18 overs. Notts saved the follow on in the 54th over with Haynes getting a single off Bailey. Balderson returned from the Pavilion End and a four through square leg by Hameed saw him to his ton off 161 balls. The highlight of his innings being his straight driving. Hameed was dropped on 104 at slip by Wells off Hartley. Frustratingly, in the last over before tea Haynes (35) was bowled by Balderson. He followed Young in shouldering arms and being bowled by 23-year-old right arm all-rounder. Notts 191 for 5 after 56.1 overs at tea with Hameed on 104.
Balderson and Hartley stayed on after tea with Notts reaching 200 in the 58th over. Notts run scoring almost ground to a halt with Williams coming on for the 67th over. Crucially, Hameed and James stood firm, the 50 partnership between Hameed and James came up in 145 balls. Lancashire took the new ball by Bailey and Balderson with Notts 241 for 5 off 80 overs. James’ (26 off 92 balls, 2x4) patient innings ended when he was out to the first delivery he faced with the new ball. Failing to move his feet he edged Balderson to Jennings at first slip, 248 for 6 in the 82nd over. The sixth wicket had chiselled out 57 hard fought runs in 25 overs. Harrison edged his second ball through third man to take Notts passed 250. He then deflected another ball through third man and then ran a two, 10 off the 82nd over. Harrison took two boundaries of the 86th over bowled by Hameed. In the 87th over, Harrison’s (21 off 18 balls, 4x4) ended when he was caught at second slip by Bruce off Bailey; 275 for 7. Stone (2 not out) joined his captain at the crease with Notts closing on 279 for 7 of 89 overs when stumps were drawn at 18:27. Balderson was the pick of the Lancashire attack taking 4 for 72.
Notts will be hoping for first inning parity when play resumes tomorrow morning. MAG
PENNINGTON LEADS LATE NOTTS FIGHTBACK
Notts led by the outstanding Dillon Pennington fought back with the new ball after Lancashire won the toss and elected to bat in warm and sunny conditions.
With Duckett electing not to play in the fixture, Moores came into the eleven. Moores averaging 24 in 74 first-class games playing as a specialist batsman. Nathan Lyon meanwhile was rested from the Lancashire team who had Saqib Mahmood playing for them for the first time since 29th May 2023.
Stone (Pavilion End) and Pennington shared the new ball in bright sunshine on the same wicket used the previously Monday for the Blaze versus Thunder 50 over match. They both bowled with pace with Pennington beating the bat. Red Rose openers Wells and Jennings stood firm. Paterson replaced Pennington in the 8th over from the Radcliffe Road and in his second over had Wells (17) caught at second slip by Harrison diving to his left, 23 for 1 in the 10th over. Pennington changed ends and replaced Stone from the Pavilion End in the 13th over. In the 16th over, Bohannon, who was doing the bulk of the scoring, hit Paterson for six over point. The wicket was clearly on the slow side with Clarke standing up to Paterson. The Lancashire 50 came up via four byes off Paterson in the 20th over. James and Stone came on in the 22nd overs and 23rd overs respectively. Both batsmen looked set but on the stroke of lunch James had Bohannon lbw for 33. Lancashire 83 for 2 off 27.5 overs with Jennings on 25. An even morning.
Jennings was joined by Balderson after lunch and they added 107 in 27 overs in relatively untroubled manner until Notts took two wickets in quick succession with 30 minutes left in the session. Jennings reached his 50 off 128 balls with a boundary off the expensive James (12-0-65-1) who was averaging a boundary an over off his bowling. Harrison came on for the 46th over and bowled a maiden. In his following over, Jennings swept him for four and then hit him for a straight six. He looked set for yet another 100 against Notts with the temperature now touching 24 degrees C. Paterson returned for the 49th over, Jennings (91 off 180 balls, 14x4, 1x6) who had suddenly tried to foot on the accelerator was dismissed attempting a reverse sweep off Harrison, Moores taking a simple catch falling backwards at slip, 190 for 3 in the 56th over. Stone returned for the 57th over and in his second over of his spell picked up his first wicket when he had Balderson lbw for 38, 196 for 4 in the 59tb over. The Lancashire 200 came up in the 62nd over via a four through square leg by Bell off a Harrison long hop. Lancashire 208 for 4 off 64 overs at tea with Bruce on 10 and Bell on 5.
Notts lost their way in the first hour after tea with Bruce and Bell adding a further 61 in 16 overs. James replaced Pennington for the 71st over. Slater came on for the 76th over, to enable Harrison to change ends, and his first delivery was a full toss which Bruce hit for six over mid-wicket. A cover driven boundary for by Kiwi Tom Bruce off Slater took him to maiden Lancashire 50 off 69 balls. Slater’s three overs going for 16. The new ball was taken by Stone and Pennington with Lancashire 269 for 4 off 80 overs and Notts rewarded for the earlier hard work by taking 4 wickets for 32 runs in 13 overs. With the second over with the new ball, Bell (18) edged Pennington to Moores at first slip who took the catch in his stomach, 273 for 5 in the 82nd over. The fifth wicket stand worth 77 in 23 overs. In his next over, Pennington had Hurst caught at third slip by Young diving to his right for a 11-ball duck, 275 for 6. Hartley (6) fell to a catch at second slip by Harrison diving to his right, in front of Moores with Pennington picking his third wicket, 289 for 7 in the 88th over. A leg glance for four by Bailey off James saw Lancashire 300 in the 94th over. In the penultimate over, Bruce (73 off 115 balls, 10x4, 1x6) was adjudged lbw to Paterson, 305 for 8 in the 95th over. Harrison bowled the final over with Lancashire on 306 for 8 in 96 overs with Bailey on 13 and Williams on 0.
Notts had bowled earlier on, without luck, but at 190-2 with 30 minutes to play in the middle session, Lancashire looked to be heading for a substantial score. Notts who bowled with good discipline through tiring hot conditions deserved their late successes with Pennington (22-8-46-3) generating much pace and was undoubtedly the pick of the bowlers. MAG

It seems an age since there's been cricket down Trent Bridge. Some might have been to Trent Bridge to see the drones back in April or to sample the fare at the food festival on the May Bank Holiday, but the schedulers messed it up again, only magnified this time because the sun shone in the East Midlands.
That 4710 that went through the gate on Monday could have been perhaps double if the same event was held over the first day of a Notts game with weather like that and if the entrance fees were the same.
Expand the game and grow the game, diversify game blah blah. I hope everyone had a great day, the game looked close. Yesterday's The Blaze actually won, but I've not read how many witnessed those proceedings on a school day. Growing the game? [The Blaze SM shows action photos with completely empty stands, sadly]
Enough Old Fart talk, on Friday bottom of the table Lancashire visit Trent Bridge. Even in the second week of May, this fixture is taking on some added significance after the Red Rose lost to Kent in the previous round and neither county [Notts or Lancs] have yet managed to win a game for themselves.
We know the Lancs lads well, most have been a thorn in our side at one time or another to varying degrees in the past in one format or another, just add Nathan Lyon to that mix and Kiwi Tom Bruce.
Owing to Trent Bridge's managed information service we know nothing about the likely Notts side.
Would have thought it likely that Duckett will be gone now for most of the summer (if we get one!) So a replacement will be needed either Monty or Moore is you would think most likely.
ReplyDeleteAs for the bowlers TB have not seen fit to tell us how Hutton is faring with his injury, That being the case and the rest of the quicker bowlers seemingly fit it's very much the captain and head coaches choice, All I would say is Pennington should be the first name on the scorecard Stone might be there given the break since the last game and there perhaps a cholce between Fletch and Pattinson, Given the presence of a certain Nathan Lyon it's unlikely the wicket will favour spin although with the weather seeming more settled who knows what could happen on the fourth day.
Should be a good contest Lancashire must surely hit some form soon, With their players it's unlikely they will stay bottom for long.
I would have preferred Liam Patterson White or Martindale to come in for Duckett. Tom Moores may have plundered a few slogged 6's recently against 3rd rate bowling attacks, but he is not a top six batsman against the grown ups. Notts are repeating the error they made in not selecting Evison, by not including LPW. How long is he going to put up with being loaned out, just as Evison was.?
ReplyDeleteThe clowns in charge never learn.
Went to the 2 Blaze matches and really enjoyed them - the standard, especially the fielding, will get better now the girls are full time - just give it a few more years
DeleteYesterday was a brilliant game, I was absolutely gutted my friend and follower on Twitter Marie Kelly didn’t fire π₯ in both games, but Nadine de Clerk and Ella ‘Steve’ Claridge both batted brilliantly in the in Trent Bridge sun ☀️
Agree above about Major Tom - a very good white ball hitter, but a top 6 batter in red ball - I’m not so sure TBH
Liam needs to play against the strongest opposition possible to improve and get back to where he was in 2022, carrying drinks at Trent Bridge won't achieve anything.
DeleteSo agree re LPW.
DeleteCan’t get my little bonce around the Sir Ben of Duckett situation - what’s going off thesedays ?????
DeleteBBC say he "opted" not to play. Thought we bowled well, even during that fine century partnership. Wicket cried out for 2 spinners. One very odd selection in that side.
DeleteIf you are watching on the live stream, it's fortunate you can press the mute button so that you don't have to listen to the monologue of boring repetitive statistics from the mouth of Mr Bracegirdle. He must be the most annoying commentator on the circuit
DeleteHe’s our very own Mr. Marmite - you love him or you don’t - a bit like Sir Robbie of Savage when he played - I think he’s just becoming a bit outdated for 2024 compared to the other live streams - I would like us to get some women on commentary, I dunno π€·♀️ if the Blaze’s Marie Kelly would be interested when availability suits but she is just the sort of variety we need having heard her speak π£ at the Notts Cricket π Lovers society meeting recently
DeleteA debate for another post perhaps, BBC Radio Commentary v Fanboys + Token girlie Streaming Commentary.
DeleteWell so much for the so called specialist batsman coming in at 5 ππππ

ReplyDeleteTOM M now surplus to requirements ?
Derbyshire ccc awaits !
( only joking Peter!)
Quest is far better so don't think so
DeleteI’m trying to work out why Duckett didn’t play. Last innings was 2 weeks ago, next innings likely in 11 days’ time in the t20. I get that i4 x t20s in 8 days and then off to Barbados is a bit intense, but 25 days without a bat with a decent 3 days forecast.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow. Hameed was superb today. Big stride forward - literally. I was a tad surprised to see Moores in at 5 ……can only imagine left handed came into it somehow.
I don’t think Hartley looked like an England spinner. Maybe 4th innings - weather permitting - he will prove me wrong.

Mullaney let the cat out of the bag on commentary today when he said that Tom Moores was a mate of his, and after discussions with his father, it was suggested that he should be brought back into the first X1 following his recent scores for the 2nds.. I bet Peter didn't need much persuading on that one.
ReplyDeleteYou get the picture now, why Tom kept his place throughout Mullaney's captaincy. Jobs for the boys.
Scoring runs in the seconds is certainly not a guide to someones ability to repeat that in the CC division one , A fact Tom Moores managed to prove today, We know that young Moores has a good eye but that needs to be allied to foot movement , Moores good eye will mean that he will get a few good scores sadly all too infrequently and certainly not often enough to justify batting at number five . Monty worked well last season surely he should have be given the opportunity first
ReplyDeleteZanga
A white ball deal next perhaps. That would open the door for Dane Schadendorf who otherwise will be out of that door at the end of summer.
DeleteWhen Tom Moores played club cricket in the Leicestershire league it was primarily in the 2nd team as there were better keeper batsman ahead of him.
DeleteHis old man predictably, brought him with him to Notts. He has unfortunately been a second-rate keeper during his time at Trent Bridge, and now his supporters within the club, are trying to reinvent him as a specialist batsman.
Schadendorf has an even a bigger mountain to climb ,now that Clarke is the number one keeper. Unfortunately most clubs now have at least one good keeper batsman on their books and it is not a given ,that Schadendorf would easily find employment to his liking elsewhere.

ReplyDeleteTruly amazing knock today from the Notts Captain . Tremendous 10 hours of concentration creates a personal best . Has given Notts a chance of a win , but the odds remain on a draw on a pretty lifeless wicket .
But you never know . Notts do need a win to cheer the fans . Amazing fact mentioned by Bracey on the Notts commentary . Three scores on excess of 200 by three different players in the last three matches . Has it been done before by Notts ccc
Lancs fan here. Amazed at the pessimism thinking pitch too good for a result though I do appreciate you have had plenty to be pessimistic about.Lancs are a demoralised rabble . We have an even worse coach and cricket manager than you !
ReplyDeleteNot sure if anyone noticed but the passage of play for Notts 10th wicket was bizarre. Hameed was farming the strike, but Jennings did nothing different with the field on the 4th or 5th balls of the over. He was therefore able to trot through for a single quite readily.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it was the heat!
Let’s hope for a better second hour than first today, by the way

Jennings is a hopeless captain ; in the tradition of English Lancashire captains. The last good one was David Hughes.
DeleteAn excellent victory. When was the last time a Notts player was on the field the whole cc match?.

ReplyDeleteWell done Notts . A fine victory today over the Lanky boys. Four day Championship cricket at its best . Hameed will enjoy his day off tomorrow after his monumental effort day after day . Evidently he was on the Trent Bridge for every minute of the whole game ! When was that last achieved? Anyway know ? I think Geoff Boycott did it ages ago in a Test match interrupted by bad weather. Notts have broken the ice and hopefully go on to better things .
I was waiting to eat my words until we did actually win rather than just being in a position where a win seemed inevitable. And utterly delighted for Hameed - what a knock. I am no longer in despair. We, most especially obviously Clarke and Young, showed that we are not the side of 2016/2019 by the heroic rearguard against Somerset. A decent showing against Warwickshire, though I would have liked to see us make their saving of the follow on a bit less comfortable, even if the win would not have been permitted by the weather, suggested, particularly with other results involving Lancashire, Worcestershire and Kent, that we have the necessary to stay up provided we can get over the barrier of turning good positions into wins. This match, albeit against the bottom club, suggests that in this year's relegation scrap we will hopefully be ok. That is a major turnaround so credit where it's due to everyone.
ReplyDeleteA brilliant game played with brilliant weather as a bonus for us Pennington adds another dimension to our attack
ReplyDeleteWell played The Rolling Stone - we knew he could bat at no9 but he adds a lot to our long tail
Well played Matty Hurst - what a brilliant knock by their young keeper/batsman.Some terrific hits into the Fox π¦ Rd stand where I was sitting today
I’m preaching to the converted on this forum but no other format can come close to this 4 day match. I really enjoy the Blast, 50 over and also The Blaze games I see, but nothing competes with Division One red ball championship cricket π I’m my opinion
A really satisfying performance from Notts.
ReplyDeleteWe have waited a long time to see the long-promised pace attack thrive, but it certainly did in the second innings and we can see the value of Stone and Pennington. Great for the Rolling Stone to be back on stage and looking much livelier than his namesakes!
I was also very encouraged by the way Notts went about the run chase. No point trudging along, Slater was right to get on with it and push the total along with a few aggressive shots.
When was the last time an opening batsman took to the crease in BOTH innings without being out in either?
A good chance of a second victory in a row with Hants next weekend, hopefully the weather is clear enough for a good game.
Notts deserved to win the game, but you are a team of imported cricketers from other counties. James and maybe Moores are the only players that have come up through your ranks.
ReplyDeleteLancs fielded 7 players that have come up through their pathway system in this match, and continue to put faith in their young players. Not sour grapes, but a valid point.
Population size of Greater Manchester alone c2.8m. Add to that Liverpool and the north west towns like Burnley, Blackpool, Blackburn, Preston. Population of the whole of Nottinghamshire c820,00. Also Lancashire had Notts developed Blatherwick in the squad as well as IPL Notts boy Luke Woodwho would have played.
DeleteSo Lanky, it must be extremely disappointing that Lancs lost faith in this game's MOTM and that he had to go elsewhere to find the quality of coaching with plenty of patience to be able re-emerge as a stronger, more dynamic cricketer than when he was shown the door at Old Trafford. But don't worry, we too aren't entirely happy with how the Notts academy pathway is repeatedly "gated-off and padlocked" owing to signings of promising players (or players that have lost their way) from other counties by our DoC - all players looking to better themselves or refind their focus or to fulfil their full potential with what we have at Trent Bridge.
DeleteYeah, well said Mr. Nottsview Admin π¨πΌ- we are not popular up and down the country and most Notts fans are not happy with the (lack) of player pathway either Lanky forever and you do make a very valid point indeedy

DeleteIs Marie Kelly a mis-heard spelling of Mariah Carey? Whatever happened to the doctor, did he get struck off?
