Worcestershire Rapids at Trent Bridge Vitality T20 Blast Loss 0 pts Report

OUTLAWS FLOP AGAIN AS SMITH STEALS THE SHOW

Notts Batting Failing For Third Time

Notts lost once more after making a pig’s ear of what should have been an easy run chase against a depleted Worcestershire side (without skipper D’Oliveira) last night at Trent Bridge.

Worcestershire won the toss and elected to bat on a cool evening in front of a poor crowd, no doubt effected by Notts poor start to the season. Pennington came in Fletcher who has a hamstring injury. This was the only change despite the obvious imbalance to the team and the long tail containing batsmen who cannot clear the rope. Coach Moores stubbornly postponing having to be make tough and difficult decisions. With the surface very much two paced and a difficult to time the ball, Notts only played one specialist spinner.

Notts dominated the opening quarter of a game before letting the visitors off the hook. Pollock hit Lister (Radcliffe Road End) for successive boundaries off the second and third deliveries of the opening over, the other four balls being not scored off. Waite edged Pennington for four and three balls later cover drove him to the ropes. The last ball was top edged for six by Pollock, 17 off the second over. Waite (11) top edged Stone to Pennington to short fine leg, 25 for 1. Pollock (16) lost his middle stump to Stone, 28 for 2; three off the third over. Hose was dropped on 0 by Moores diving to his right of Pennington, a crucial miss, one run off the 4th over. Cobb drove Stone for 4 and Hose straight drove him to the boundary, nine off the 5th over. Cobb (11) hit Pennington for a straight four but next ball holed out to Harrison on the deep square leg ropes, 42 for 3. Brookes hit Pennington to the point boundary. Worcestershire 50 for 3 after 6 overs.

The Pears lost three more wickets in the next three overs with Notts seemingly in a match winning position. Brookes was run out for 6 by Jack Haynes, running to fine leg, hesitating going for a two off Harrison, 52 for 4. Four off the 7th over. Jones (1) hit Lister straight down James's throat at long leg, 55 for 5. Taylor was dropped on 0 by Haynes at deep square leg but was dismissed the very next ball bowled by Harrison, going for an expansive legside shot, for 2, 58 for 6, two off the 9th over. Montgomery was introduced in the 10th over and the pressure was released, from this point Worcestershire dominated with Hose (36 off 37 balls, 3x4, 1x6) and Smith (51 not out, 5x4, 2x6) adding a match winning 82 in 9.3 overs for the seventh wicket.

Smith pulled Montgomery for successive legside fours. Worcestershire 69 for 6 after 10 overs. Eleven off Montgomery’s only over. Harrison conceded four off the 11th over. Smith hit James for 6 over long on, 10 off the 12th over. Harrison (4-0-14-1) went for four singles off his last over. Harrison along with Lister, the only two Notts players on the night who could say had performed well. Smith hit James for fours through extra cover and backward square leg, 11 off the 14th over. Hose hit Pennington (4-0-39-1) for six over square leg. Worcestershire 107 for 6 off 15 overs.

Smith hit Lister for six over long on, 12 including 2 leg byes off the 16th over. Smith hit Stoke for a legside four then Hose ramped him for four and then pulled Stone to the long leg boundary, 18 off the 17th over, Worcestershire now very much in the contest. Lister (4-0-20-2) bowled an outstanding last over conceding a single and two leg byes before bowling Hose with a slower delivery with his last ball, 140 for 7. Smith got to his 50 off 33 balls with a single off Stone (4-0-34-2), four off the 19th over. Walsh edged James for 4. Walsh was out next ball caught by Hales at long on, 148 for 8. Roderick (5 not out) was dropped on 2 by Moores stretching above his head off James (3-0-30-1). The stumper injuring his shoulder in the process, he continued after treatment Worcestershire closed on 154 for 8. The fifth and sixth bowler for Notts proving a weak link.

Notts entered a tricky chase knowing that if the top three failed the game was up. They all departed within the powerplay. Clarke leg glanced Smith for 4, seven off the first over. Clarke hit Taylor to the extra cover ropes. Clarke (9) was caught and bowled by Taylor, 11 for 1 in the 2nd over. Finch went for 5 off the third over. The out of form Hales (5) was caught at deep square leg off Smith, 18 for 2. Just one run off the 4th over. Taylor went for 4 off the 5th over. Haynes (11) hit Finch for a straight six but was adjudged lbw to the next ball, 29 for 3. Notts a paltry 30 for 3 at the end of the powerplay. The destination of the contest already decided.

The Notts batsmen were struggling to time the ball and reach the ropes. The statistics are telling, Worcestershire hitting 16 fours and four sixes against 8 fours and 2 sixes for Notts. Ethan Brookes went for eight for the 7th over and Walsh six off the 8th over. Young hit Brookes for 4 through mid-wicket, 10 off the over. Cobb went for 7, Notts 61 for 3 off 10 overs.

Young cut Walsh to the point ropes, 10 off the 11th over. Although scoring too slowly, Young and Montgomery were at least consolidating, their 4th wicket partnership of 44 lasting 6 overs. They were out to successive balls. Montgomery (20) was caught in the covers by Pollock off Taylor. James, who came in above the injured Moores, hit his first delivery to bowler Taylor who deflected the ball onto his stumps with the unlucky Young (25 off 27 balls) well out of his crease, 73 for 5 in the 12th over. Young has an uninspiring T20 record and apart from his mammoth innings at Taunton has disappointed this season. The crowd were once again leaving in great numbers after an insipid and uninspired batting performance.

Walsh conceded five off the 13th over. Cobb (2-0-13-0) went for 6 in the 14th over. James (7 off 11 balls) was caught on the mid-wicket ropes by Jones off Walsh (4 0 25 1), 90 for 6 after 15 overs. Finch went for 6 in the 16th over. Harrison (19) scooped Taylor (4-0-23-2) for 4, but he was run out off the last ball going for a single to Hose in the covers and losing his footing, 105 for 7. Moores, clearly in discomfort with his shoulder, edged Smith for 4, eight off the 18th over. Stone (14 not out) hit Finch (4-0-28-1) for four through extra cover and ramped him to boundary, 11 off the 19th over. Moores (20 not out off 15 balls) hit Smith for 6 over mid-wicket in the last over. Notts limping to a sorry 134 for 7 off 20 overs had comfortably lost a low scoring contest by 20 runs. A very satisfying win for a Worcestershire side against a Notts team fielding three of their former players.

The Notts batting line-up is weak, lacking hitting power and desperately short of confidence. Will coach Moores finally make belated changes. The punters not happy with an inspiring match and a Notts batting line-up lacking fight. The pressure very much on, with the local Derby tonight. If the current run continues it will cost the club considerably gate money. Both home games have been poorly attended as the fans vote their feet. Notts just one win in 10 competitive games in 2024. Match day... hoping for a surprise.

If the eleven isn't: Clarke, Hales, Young, Montgomery, Haynes, Moores, James, Harrison, Stone, Pennington, Lister; I'll be very much surprised.

Patterson-White, Martindale and Pettman all playing at Worksop in the  first match

Rapids will be from: Jake Libby, Josh Cobb, Matthew Waite, Ed Pollock, Gareth Roderick, Tom Taylor, Brett D'Oliveira, Nathan Smith, Ben Gibbons, Adam Hose, Adam Finch, Ethan Brookes, Hayden Walsh and Rob Jones.

05/06

Pravda are doing the ground work for a Haseeb Hameed Blast return, it's got a Peter Moores risk adverse, backward step written all over it... but not quite yet.

04/06

Featuring eight players from their last Blast fixture at the weekend, Derbyshire posted 206/4 in their 20 overs in the first game at Worksop College. Notts were 125/3 in the 15th over when rain intervened (12 runs behind par). The Notts XI featuring only Hameed and Slater that have Blast experience.

Both games at Worksop featured a similar pattern, both won by the visitors.

So why didn't Notts use these games to give certain players that haven't yet fired in the Blast 2024 the opportunity find some form in readiness for the coming group games?

Two defeats in the two games played, it's not the end of the world, nor is it the end of the tournament but it is a strong indicator that something has to change.

Eight wins from the last twelve should secure a quarter-final place away from home, so has the coach got it in him - the force to bring about change?

If you read the competition preview on this blog, you may remember that it was expected that the modern world-wide approach to bowler strategy would be followed, ie slow the bowling down, make the batsmen put the pace on the ball, select multiple spin options for the captain to switch and changeabout. However, Peter Moores has gone his own way and hasn't followed the tried and tested approach.

The departure at the last minute of Matt Carter must have been a hammer blow for the head coach and he hasn't yet had time to react, as change comes so slowly to him. The three pronged pace-on assault did relatively well at Edgbaston, but how much more control might three spinners have had? Certainly Bears used a double complement of spin (compared to Outlaws) and won the game with some comfort. So why did Matt Carter leave so unexpectedly and at the last minute, "by mutual consent" (whatever that really means)? Supporters and those others that shell out their hard earned cash on match days deserve a better explanation Trent Bridge dot com.

Samit Patel is seeing something of a renaissance in this first week of his honeymoon at Derbyshire, but the writing had been on the wall at Notts for Samit for two or three years; he had stayed too long (in collusion with a change-adverse coach) and we saw that development of alternative bowlers had stopped, as did development of middle order batting muscle. We are seeing the results of that now; no spin bowler with any T20 match experience that can now walk into the team (now that Samit has left / Matt Carter has been ejected) and no one batting outside of the top four that can hit a ball over the boundary with regularity. These are the failures of this management team. Mr Moores did not inherit this problem, this situation is of his own making. Steven Mullaney's decline and role change can't have come as a surprise to the coach either, but little preparation for the transition took place.

I think Peter Moores sees change as risk, and that he by his own nature tries to eliminate risks. I think he'll have to take a risk or two if we're going to find our next Samit Patel.

The second eleven have two SET20 matches at Worksop College on Tuesday, team selection ought to be more competitive than usual, but will it?

  1. The Head Coach seems to have gone back in time to around 2010 or so, before pace off and spin options generally do the business after the PP overs. Yes, we are limited - especially after the ‘sudden’ release of Matt Carter - as we do not possess a world 🌎 class slow bowler, but Pete’s team selection is still incomprehensible in just hoping Calvin and General Montgomery don’t get the treatment, when LPW is just on the sidelines plus he will provide boundary clearing options after Tumbling Tom in the order - surely it’s a no-brainer and Joe Clarke should call the shots over ultra cautious Peter - he surely would have the backing of the players in this decision ? Play him in place of Lyndon James, a player with fine red ball batting potential, just not suited to a white ball slogfest
Whilst he’s no Adam Gilchrist, I don’t think Tumbling Tom is the main problem. He is a relatively proven white ball t20 performer as shown by the runs he scored in last year’s blast, 371 runs as 2nd highest scorer, behind Joe Clarke, and topping the Notts batting averages - he should be nowhere near our red ball side however that should be reiterated
Having said all that I can easily go with MWS’s summisation on the previous chat and getting Clarke to keep instead - however, if you bring Ben Martindale in I wouldn’t bat him in the PP as the first 6 overs are too vital for him making any debut, I would bat him after LPW and before Calvin in the order, thus bolstering the middle/lower order. He’s only just started scoring proper runs for the stiffs this season, so I would introduce him later on, the way we did briefly with Lord Budinger before his defection to the foxes 🦊 but I could certainly give those changed a go as outlined by MWS previously

    1. Sammy King and Fateh Singh have shown that they can hit a ball a long way in the ODC. Get them in the first team now, there's more to gain with nothing to lose. What is the point of keeping a second eleven squad if you aren't ever going to use those players in the first team, unless that player is a child of the head coach, obviously.

    2. It's certainly frustrating having to tolerate Peter Moores if you are a Notts supporter. You have a wicket keeper batsman in the 2nd team who not that long ago scored 1000 runs in a season, yet his name is barely mentioned these days.He along with a few others, must wonder why they are wasting their time at Notts.
It's even more frustrating when you see how well Evison is performing for Kent.
Liam Patterson-White is likely to go the same way, unless ,Moores starts to select him very soon

    3. Don't get me started again on the myopic attitude of Moores and Newell when it came to Joey Evison, it was obvious he was going to be a cut above the rest but Moores picks his teams with one eye on birth certificates, so he was too young and he is also not a relative of his.

  2. Just watched another brilliant win for The Blaze on Lancs TV 📺 as we thrashed Lancashire Thunder by 7 wckts, so that’s 5 from 5 so far and hopefully nicely progressing onto Finals Day
Some brilliant fielding in the deep by the lovely Marie including 2 fantastic grabs. Also, good to see her bowling today, one over for a very respectable 10 runs and very unlucky not to take a wicket.
Now switched over to the Surrey v Somerset stream and watching Jake Ball bowling.

  3. Well at least the bowling looked a lot better than our previous inept performance, We still need someone like Mull (still under contract as a player apparently )to vary our attack ,Lyndon James is a fine player and will be at the club for a long while yet, But not i suspect in the T20 team, So who do we replace him with ? Its not a long list, Tom Loten comes to mind but his non appearance in any matchday squads suggests its not going to happen Sammy King or Fateh Singh could come in but the same applies to them as it does to Loten , Which leaves LPW who would be my choice , He might not do too well but unless we play him we will never know !

  7. Quite inconceivable that some out of form first picks didn’t play in either game yesterday - what harm could it possibly have done in the circumstances ?
No doubt we’ll overcome a distinctly average Worcester Raptors side tomorrow and our campaign will finally be underway. Suspect very similar to last year, win a few - lose a few, possibly scrape into the quarters away from home 🏡 somewhere
Big game for the lovely Marie and the Blaze girls Friday versus Western Storm at The Uptonsteel, Grace Road. Gutted 😢 I won’t be able to make this game, but as will be based at home will be watching this on the live stream, assuming Leicester are covering it also. 5 from 5 now in The Charlotte Edwards and nicely progressing onto Finals Day all being well

  8. Peter reverting to type and bringing HH in again would surprise no-one as daft as that selection in t20 probably is
Would he not have been better insisting most of the side that played the last 2 games, play over both of yesterday’s games instead of selecting the red ball captain 👩‍✈️(and a fine player of such format) who is never going to be suited to clearing the ropes or batting at a high enough strike rate to influence the Notts target even if he only made 20/30 or so off say 10-15 balls. It just isn’t Haseeb’s format in this t20 modern era
Just watched Pravda’s “Alternative Angle” promo vid - certainly enough self congratulating and back slapping in there - almost assume everything in the garden 🪴 is rosy after watching that production ?

Has he picked up a niggling injury ? Its a must win game tomorrow night to lift everyone’s spirits (and increase attendances!)
Tomorrow’s attendance will be interesting . Let’s hope it’s at least half full to create a good positive atmosphere.
Come on Joe .! Marshall the troops into some sort of order. How about an overdue century from Alex Hales ? It was once within his scope . Are those glory days now gone forever? There used to be a buzz in the crowd when he came out to bat - not that long ago.

  10. I only got there for Notts batting so can’t comment on how we bowled and fielded.

I thought we were unlucky tonight with the bat. Hales picked the only fielder on the leg side - so it seemed. Monty drilled one which was 4 had it been 6 inches either side of the fielder. Young was very unfortunate and the other lads tried but had too much to do.

    We’re still
Imbalanced and lacking confidence, but the right side of the line between bad luck and bad play tonight I thought.

  11. Can it get any better the simple answer
    Is a big No
That as to be one of the worst bowling performance by a Notts 20/20 side against a Worcester side that's batting
Was just as bad chucking wickets away
Like they needed to back home asp that were really there for the taking
    Crowds are declining fast
The poor game management & tactics are totally clueless in what's become a stale environment for all involved at Notts
I will keep stating moors & newall need to
Go, samit & chappell both visiting today for the game' must be licking their lips with the anticipation of playing against a shambolic team in free fall, there's one thing for certain they will both won't to prove a point at derby to the DOC & who would bet against them

  12. Peter Moores promised before the start of the tournament, that he would play some exciting young talent. Where is he hiding it, as it certainly isn't on the field of play.

A very lack lustre atmosphere in Trent Bridge last night , on top of which we had to endure a screeching female host spouting a compete load of rubbish over the tannoy plus a pretty low key performance from DJ Prince. Sad to see droves of spectators leaving the ground well before the match had finished.Thank goodness they are doing away with the now tedious Sweet Caroline community singing . There was only one rendition last night with about 50 die hards singing the chorus . It’s been done to death . We need a fresh anthem to sing , but NOT rap based please,

  19. Allround poor and disappointing tonight. Had the game won but let them off the hook, and then poor batting gave them the game. The team are giving the crowd nothing to get excited about, so gradually numbers are diminishing. The fact that we had four ex Pears playing tonight says a lot about the club and how stagnant it is becoming.
The balance of the team is completely wrong and surely Moores must know this or he needs to go. You dont win 20/20 games with four pace bowlers and one spinner. That was from the nineties. The batting line up lack any power or guile once Hales and Clarke go, which isn't taking long. oh for a middle order of Samit, Mulaney, Christian, and Read !!!!
THIS IS GOING TO BE A LONG AND VERY POOR SEASON.

It’s so sad to read all these negative comments . But let’s face it - they are deserved and aimed at well paid people in positions of power who are simply not earning their crust .
The lack of spectators must be a worry for the TB marketing department . On top of the poor team performance we have to put up with this -
Chicken and chips from a mobile unit - priced at £14 . Served up in a disgusting
manner using latex covered hands picking up handfulls if chips ( not using a serving scoop )
Pizza priced at a ludicrous £15
Fish n Chips £14 served from a mobile unit - not served up in an attractive fashion . £14 !? Have they gone mad ?
A pint of beer / lager - £7 including the £1 charge for a plastic glass ( non refundable)
With catering prices like these then no wonder the queues to buy the food and drink were non existent . People are voting with their feet and simply refusing to pay such inflated prices for such inferior fodder . Who can blame them ?

    1. Agree. I made a less detailed point after the first match. Attendances are well down and prices are well up! I know the competition takes place earlier in the summer, but my guess is that our average attendance is 35% lower than the peak years.

      This is a combination of.

      The Hundred
      6-30 start times
On the day pricing going over £25
      Ridiculous food and drink prices

And probably a less good team.

      I would like to see

Better publicity away from the ground itself
Lower adult and u21 entry costs by 20%
      Same reduction in drink prices.
Food prices to be reviewed as I suspect there is an agreement between the stall holders and the club on ground rent costs etc.

I’d see this as basic management to be blunt and I’m quite surprised nothing has yet been done

  24. Interest in the shortest form of the game is waning fast and is at saturation point worldwide. Cricket has been ruined by the very people entrusted with its welfare chasing a quick buck. The Hundred has been disastrous, they are already trying to sell it off in order to try and recoup some of its losses. It is time to re-establish the County Championship as the pinnacle of the domestic game and bring back the 50 over game which was always sitting comfortably alongside of it, probably at weekends. The T20 Blast can then shine brightly during the long days of mid summer.

Yes Jim - very valid common sense points .
Marketing Departments often make a basic error as they don’t exist in the real world as experienced by the average punter . Marketing people think that they can increase turnover and profit simply by increasing prices . Its simply not the right thing to do in these difficult times
    ( for many)
    Basic maths
What brings in more profit ?
Selling 2,000 pints of ale at £7 ?
    Or 4,000 pints at £5!
    It’s a no brainer !
Pro rata for the TB food outlets.
A third to half full ground is no good to anybody .
Come on Notts . Reduce prices all round and help to fill the massive gaps in the stands and thus generate a more vibrant atmosphere.
