15/08

Friday today, could have been billed as a Back to School Day with a little imagination, timing and perhaps new List A hosting venues nationally.

On VJ  Day:

Play up! Play up! And play the game!

By Sir Henry Newbolt

There's a breathless hush in the close to-night

Ten to make and the match to win

A bumping pitch and a blinding light,

An hour to play, and the last man in.

And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat.

Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,

But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote

"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

The sand of the desert is sodden red-

Red with the wreck of the square that broke

The gatling's jammed and the colonel dead,

And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.

The river of death has brimmed its banks,

And England's far and Honor a name,

But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks-

"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

This is the word that year by year,

While in her place the school is set,

Every one of her sons must hear,

And none that hears it dare forget.

This they all with joyful mind

And bear through life Eke a torch in flame,

falling fling to the host behind-

"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

As it stands there are fixtures at Repton and Rugby schools today, but Notts are one of just four counties not playing today. 5 matches are at county HQs.

Notts found wanting (one way or another) on most of our outings in this competition so far, will be awaiting any additions and tweaks to the squad prior to their journey to Wales and the HQ there, in what will be a a nine day tour of County HQs for the Outlaws (all of them H*ndred hosting venues to boot).

Great to get one over Notts

We all need to rally around the General, whose been dealt a dud hand that needs a few thrump cards to support the odd ace he is already holding.

YES - the Brits know how to “ play the game “ even in these changing times . But as we all know , some people ( and Nations) do not .

  2. I see the other General - Montgomery - hits 92 for Derby at Reptile 🐍 school 🏫 against the Worcester Raptors
I’ve heard differing reports as to whether he was legally entitled to ask to go on loan to his new County from next year NOW - or whether we decided to make our squad EVEN weaker which is quite something when it’s still a prestigious trophy πŸ† to win on home 🏑 soil?
Guess it’s all epidemic(as Del Boy would say) and water πŸ’¦ under the Charles Bridge anyway now ???

  3. Newell is so lazy. An international player who took 5 in 5 recently also scored 120+ in 68 balls today. Did we enquire about him? He was available. Did we hell...

    1. Just don’t think he takes the comp. seriously AndyB1967 which I find appalling - no doubt his thoughts are somewhere else during August - I wonder πŸ’ where ????

    2. From his own mouth, his No. 1 priority is to get the R*ckets partnership with Cain and Ares over the line.

    3. Surely that is the priority for the CEO rather than the Director of Cricket - Kermit

  4. & don't forget he's overseeing the pavilion rebuild 🀣 really do not know why he's involved in that I personally see that project becoming a disaster & overspend

SURELY DANE S gets the wicketkeepers job tomorrow ? If not , then why keep him on the books ? He deserves his chance .

  7. Apparently we’ve got Dill Pennington now ? A mate on Twitter(X) informs me that the TRs have got Tom Banton in their squad - so why the hell doesn’t he cover as keeper on a temporary basis ? They shouldn’t be allowed to raid the Counties at will once the 16.4 has kicked off - possible rules allowed in very special circumstances if they cannot field a squad of say 14, due to injury or illness in the camp etc

    1. Tom Banton is carrying an injury I believe which means he is unable to keep wicket - Kermit

  8. Notts now down to the bare-bones the
Metro cup is a disjointed competition
Allowing the counties to play some cricket in August which is of a very poor standard
The hundred is killing the game but we all know it's all about the money, the top brass should really be careful what they wish for

    1. Yes indeed Kerm….and an injury so serious…..he can still open the batting for the TRs…….so what do we make of that one folks as bugs 🐜 bunny 🐰 would have said ? Or is it just a case of they want the former Tom Moores now Major Tom MK2 in the side and it’s a rather convenient way of doing it ??? Anyone remember Paul McCartney and the Frog Chorus ??? 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸by the way ???
