NOTTS OUT-GUN GLAMORGAN

Centurion Jack Haynes leads the charge

Notts gained their second victory of the 2025 Metro Bank competition with a what turned out to be a comfortable 7 wicket win over Glamorgan at sunny Cardiff today with 21 balls to spare. Pivotal to their victory charge was a third wicket stand of 141 for the third wicket in 17.3 overs between Jack Haynes (124 off 103 balls, 11x4, 4x6) and Haseeb Hameed (58 not out off 60 balls, 4x4).

Notts won the toss and elected to bowl on a greenish pitch which got slower and lower as the game progressed. Nottingham born 18 year old all-rounder Byron Hatton-Lowe made his Notts debut and Dillon Pennington, released for the match by Trent Rockets, his Notts List A debut. Also coming into the team were Martindale and Schadendorf. Out of the team went McCann, Patterson-White, Moores and Hutton. Glamorgan were also heavily depleted and like Notts without overseas players and crucially there was no Northeast or Ingram.

Pennington (Taff End) and Lord opened the bowling in front of a crowd of around 1,200.  Pennington opened with a maiden. Byrom took two successive boundaries off the 5th over bowled by Pennington and in his next over Pennington conceded two fours in three balls off the bat of Tribe. Lord was replaced by Hatton-Lowe who's first two deliveries were hit for four by Tribe. Glamorgan 56 for 0 after 10 overs including 10 boundaries.

It was obvious that Notts were concerned about the short straight boundaries and were concentrating on restricting the runs by pitching short and making the Glamorgan batsmen hit square of the wicket. James replaced Pennington for the 11th over. Tribe (43) skied a short ball from Hatton-Lowe with Martindale taking the catch low down running in from the cover ropes, 71 for 1 in the 12th over. Hatton-Lowe went for 10 in the 14th over, two boundaries for Hurle. A long hop by Hatton-Lowe was smashed by Hurle (12) straight down the throat of King at square leg, 100 for 2 in the 16th over.

Pocklington came on for the 17th over and not the first time in the 50 over campaign was Notts' best bowler. Carlson was dropped on 8 by Slater at fine leg off Pocklington in the 21st over. Byrom reached his 50 off 62 balls. After a six over spell by Hatton-Lowe he was replaced by Lord from the  Cathedral Road End for the 22nd over. Another short ball got Notts their third wicket. Byrom (62 off 72 balls, 10x4) skying Lord straight to Martindale at deep square leg, 139 for 3 in the 24th over. Glamorgan could only double their score from the half way point.

The 25th over was a maiden by Pocklington. In the 26th over, a long hop from Lord was put straight down James' throat at long leg by Carlson (17), 142 for 4 in the 26th over. In all truth up to this point the match had been of a pretty low quality, but Notts upped the ante for remainder of the game.

Pennington and James returned for the 29th and 30th overs respectively. In the 30th over bowled by James, Smale (16) played him to Lord at backward point and went for a risky single, Lord missed his shy at the stumps with Hameed at mid wicket picking up the ball and running Smale out at the non-strikers end, 165 for 5. Hatton-Lowe replaced Pennington from the Taff End and Ul Hassan top edged him for six. Pocklington came back for the 39th over and had Ul Hassan (20) caught at cover by Hameed, 205 for 6. Hatton-Lowe (10 0 65 2) immediately changed ends to bowl his last two overs. Lord came on to replace him for the 44th over. Pocklington and Lord bowled out with figures 10-1-46-1 and 10-0-50-2 respectively. Douthwaite hit the returning  Pennington for six over long on, into the River Taff, 14 off the 47th over. James came back and was hit for six over long on by Dan Douthwaite (36) who fell next ball caught by Martindale at backward square leg (262 for 7), 12 off the 48th over. Root got to his 50 off 65 with a four through mid wicket off Pennington (10 1 54 0). Root hit James to Lord at long on but Gorvin (1) was sent back attempting attempting to run a two and Schadendorf whipped off the bails. Billy Root (56 off 70 balls, 4x4) tamely hit James (10 0 56 2) to Pocklington at mid off (276 for 9). Glamorgan 277 for 9 off 50 overs with Leonard on 2 and Franco on 1. Once again it took Notts 3 hours 45 minutes to bowl their 50 overs.

Leonard (Taff End) and Ul Hassan opened the bowling. Martindale (21) took two boundaries off Leonard in both the 5th and 7th overs but was dismissed in the 8th over caught behind by keeper Smale off Ul Hassan, 41 for 1. Douthwaite came on for the 9th over. The 10th over bowled by Ul Hassan was a maiden. Notts 46 for 1.

Ul Hassan  (7 1 19 1) was Glamorgan's best bowler but was not given a second spell. Gorvin came on for the 16th over with Smale standing up. Eighteen year old slow left armer Romano Franco came on for the 17th over. Notts 92 for 1 off 20 overs.

The two spinners had a tight rein on the run rate with Slater and Haynes dealing mostly in singles.  Slater got to 50 off 62 balls with a single off Franco in the 23rd over. Carlson bowled the 24th over, Slater hitting him for four through backward point. In the 25th over, Slater (57) pulled a ball from Franco and was caught on the square leg ropes by Douthwaite,  116 for 2. Only 18 runs came off the following five overs with Notts standing at 134 for two off 29 overs, needing another 145 in 21 overs at 6.90 RPO, it was still any ones game.

Notts though put their foot on the accelerator. Haynes reverse swept Carlson for four and Hameed straight drove for a boundary, 11 off the 30th over.

Haynes got to 50 off 62 balls with a single off Franco. Haynes hit two fours off Leonard (8 0 57 0) in the 34th over. Hameed straight drove Franco (10 0 51 1) for four and Haynes hit him for four through mid wicket; 10 off the 35th over. Douthwaite returned and Haynes on 79 drove him just short of Gorvin at mid on. Glamorgan were losing their foothold. A no ball by Douthwaite was hit by Haynes for a six over mid wicket, 15 off the 36th over.

Haynes hit Gorvin for six over mid wicket, eight runs off the 37th over. Haynes pulled Douthwaite (6 0 46 0) for 4, 11 off the 38th over. Haynes hit Gorvin (6 0 38 0) for four, 10 off the 39th over. Haynes reached his 100 off 94 balls with a single off Carlson and then reverse swept him for four and swept for six over backward square leg, 15 off the 40th over. Notts 237 for 2 off 40 overs.

Hameed hit Leonard for two fours over mid wicket in the 41st over. Haynes (124) hit Tribe for six over long on but then was caught behind by Smale off the occasional spinner, 257 for 3 in the 42nd over. Haynes after reaching 50 in 62 balls had added a further 74 in 41 balls to play the match winning knock. Hameed got to his 50 in 49 balls. After playing back five dot balls from Tribe (3 0 17 1) and
Carlson, Notts got home at 18:02 via an extra cover four from James (15 not out) off the expensive Carlson (6.3 0 53 0). Notts 282 for 3 off 46.3 overs. It was their first win in Wales in 11 years.

Notts lie fourth in the table needing to win all three of the remaining games to have a realistic chance of qualifying. Next up third place Hampshire at the Rose Bowl on Wednesday. The big question is how many of Patterson-White,  McCann and Pennington will be available for the match? MAG

15/08

Friday today, could have been billed as a Back to School Day with a little imagination, timing and perhaps new List A hosting venues nationally.

On VJ  Day:

Play up! Play up! And play the game!

By Sir Henry Newbolt

There's a breathless hush in the close to-night

Ten to make and the match to win

A bumping pitch and a blinding light,

An hour to play, and the last man in.

And it's not for the sake of a ribboned coat.

Or the selfish hope of a season's fame,

But his captain's hand on his shoulder smote

"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

The sand of the desert is sodden red-

Red with the wreck of the square that broke

The gatling's jammed and the colonel dead,

And the regiment blind with dust and smoke.

The river of death has brimmed its banks,

And England's far and Honor a name,

But the voice of a schoolboy rallies the ranks-

"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

This is the word that year by year,

While in her place the school is set,

Every one of her sons must hear,

And none that hears it dare forget.

This they all with joyful mind

And bear through life Eke a torch in flame,

falling fling to the host behind-

"Play up! Play up! And play the game!"

As it stands there are fixtures at Repton and Rugby schools today, but Notts are one of just four counties not playing today. 5 matches are at county HQs.

Notts found wanting (one way or another) on most of our outings in this competition so far, will be awaiting any additions and tweaks to the squad prior to their journey to Wales and the HQ there, in what will be a a nine day tour of County HQs for the Outlaws (all of them H*ndred hosting venues to boot).

Great to get one over Notts

We all need to rally around the General, whose been dealt a dud hand that needs a few thrump cards to support the odd ace he is already holding.

YES - the Brits know how to “ play the game “ even in these changing times . But as we all know , some people ( and Nations) do not .

  2. I see the other General - Montgomery - hits 92 for Derby at Reptile 🐍 school 🏫 against the Worcester Raptors
I’ve heard differing reports as to whether he was legally entitled to ask to go on loan to his new County from next year NOW - or whether we decided to make our squad EVEN weaker which is quite something when it’s still a prestigious trophy πŸ† to win on home 🏑 soil?
Guess it’s all epidemic(as Del Boy would say) and water πŸ’¦ under the Charles Bridge anyway now ???

  3. Newell is so lazy. An international player who took 5 in 5 recently also scored 120+ in 68 balls today. Did we enquire about him? He was available. Did we hell...

    1. Just don’t think he takes the comp. seriously AndyB1967 which I find appalling - no doubt his thoughts are somewhere else during August - I wonder πŸ’ where ????

    2. From his own mouth, his No. 1 priority is to get the R*ckets partnership with Cain and Ares over the line.

    3. Surely that is the priority for the CEO rather than the Director of Cricket - Kermit

  4. & don't forget he's overseeing the pavilion rebuild 🀣 really do not know why he's involved in that I personally see that project becoming a disaster & overspend

SURELY DANE S gets the wicketkeepers job tomorrow ? If not , then why keep him on the books ? He deserves his chance .

  7. Apparently we’ve got Dill Pennington now ? A mate on Twitter(X) informs me that the TRs have got Tom Banton in their squad - so why the hell doesn’t he cover as keeper on a temporary basis ? They shouldn’t be allowed to raid the Counties at will once the 16.4 has kicked off - possible rules allowed in very special circumstances if they cannot field a squad of say 14, due to injury or illness in the camp etc

    1. Tom Banton is carrying an injury I believe which means he is unable to keep wicket - Kermit

  8. Notts now down to the bare-bones the
Metro cup is a disjointed competition
Allowing the counties to play some cricket in August which is of a very poor standard
The hundred is killing the game but we all know it's all about the money, the top brass should really be careful what they wish for

    1. Yes indeed Kerm….and an injury so serious…..he can still open the batting for the TRs…….so what do we make of that one folks as bugs 🐜 bunny 🐰 would have said ? Or is it just a case of they want the former Tom Moores now Major Tom MK2 in the side and it’s a rather convenient way of doing it ??? Anyone remember Paul McCartney and the Frog Chorus ??? 🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸🐸by the way ???

  9. Nothing changes much
Sam's playing for the Barbados royals in the CPL getting hammered around the ground 4-45-1 it's about money, these mercenaries are embarrassing & most have gone past there sell by date we would be better giving the home grown talent the opportunity to play instead of wasting money on these globe trotters

    1. Totally agree. When you look at the returns of some of the 2 xi who are given a chance they don’t seem to cartoon much from those short term overseas signings. (In white ball cricket I mean).

SO ITS 279 to win today .Think Glamorgan are slight favourites to win this one . Notts have lost the rejuvenated Tom Moores so lets hope Dane S takes his overdue big chance. Certainly was a strange looking Notts 11 today but the inexperienced bowlers have not let Notts down .Captain Hameed is perhaps ready for a good score today .
