COMING OF AGE DEFEAT FOR BRAVE OUTLAWS YOUNGSTERS
Despite a brave performance from an inexperienced Notts line up, Kent won an exciting game at boiling Beckenham yesterday by 5 wickets with 4 balls to spare in front of a crowd of approximately 1,250.
Notts won the toss and elected to bat and a good batting surface with a lightning-fast outfield. Notts were down to the bare bones with Hutton rested, Pennington not released from Welsh Fire, Munsey playing for Scotland and Patterson-White recalled by Sunrisers. In came 33-year-old Pakistani white ball international Tayyab Tahir currently playing for Woodhall Spa CC in the Lincolnshire Premier League fir his Notts debut. Hatton-Lowe was recalled to the line up and Sam Secharan made his first white ball appearance of the season. The Eleven was down to three capped players Hameed, Verreynne and James. Former Hucknall CC South African, Keith Dudgeon was rested from a Kent eleven with a lot more experience and with only three Hundred call-ups.
Stewart (City End) and Quinn opened the bowling. Martindale looked in good form and dominated the early scoring. In contrast McCann was struggling to time the ball and was dropped on 0 in the 4th over by Singh at square leg off Quinn - a sitter. The over turned into a profitable one for Notts five wides followed next ball and the Martindale hit two boundaries, 16 off the over.
Evison replaced Stewart for the 9th over and in the following over McCann (7) drove Quinn straight to Bell-Drummond at mid-on. Notts 41 for 1 off 10 overs.
Martindale hit Quinn for three successive fours as Notts passed 50, 16 off the 12th over.
Tahir took 8 balls to get off the mark with a single off Evison in the 13th over. Martindale got to his 50 off 49 balls in the 15th over. Tahir (6) got a leading edge to Singh and was caught and bowled, 77 for 2 in the 16th over. Next over, leg spinner Parkinson was introduced and when for ten in his opening over with Martindale, playing his best innings for Notts, going passed his career best List A score of 55 v Essex at Chelmsford in 2023.
Notts reached 100 in the 21st over via a single for Martindale off the leg spinner. Stewart returned and, in the following, over, Hameed’s (23) disappointing run in the tournament continued when he slapped Parkinson straight to Dawkins at mid-wicket; 114-3 in the 23rd over. Notts reached 124-3 at half-way house.
Martindale and the in-form Verreynne joined forces and added 91 in 15.1 overs for the 4th wicket the highest of Notts’ innings. Quinn (8-1-61-1) went for 11 in the 30th over, boundaries for both batsmen as the scoring accelerated.
Jaydn Denly (5-0-27-0) bowled five overs of slow left arm on the bounce from the 31st over in his fourth over and 37th of the innings Martindale reached a deserved maiden ton in 107 balls. Three balls later Verreynne got to his 50 in 45 balls. Frustratingly Martindale (101 in 112 balls, 10x4) departed in caught at mid on by Northeast off Evison. Was this his breakthrough innings? Notts 205-4 off 38 overs. He had set the platform however 88 in the final 12 overs was insufficient to set a really challenging total – Verreynne and James adding 53 in 7 overs.
Notts were 217 for 4 off 40 overs. Evison (9-0-46-1) went for 11 plus a leg bye in the 42nd over including two fours for James. Stewart returned for the 44th over and went for nine. James switch hit Parkinson for four. Later in the over Verreynne (71 off 65 balls, 6x4, 1x6) hit him for a square leg six but fell next ball trying to repeat the shot caught by Finch on the square leg ropes, 11 off the over. Notts 258 for 5 off 45 overs.
Seecharan (14) was dropped on 9 by Bell-Drummond at mid-wicket off Parkinson (10 0 62 2) but he fell next over caught at deep mid-wicket by Jaydn Denly off Singh, 279 for 6 in the 48th over. Hatton-Lowe (3) was caught at point by Northeast off Stewart (10 0 48 1), 282 for 7 in the 49th over. Off the penultimate ball of the innings, James (43 off 35 balls, 6x4) fell to a catch at deep mid-wicket by Finch off Singh. Next ball, Sam Wood fell for a golden duck caught at long off by Northeast off Singh, he finished with a List A best (8-0-40-4). Notts 293 for 9 off 50 overs – a total despite the efforts of Martindale, Verreynne and James which looked under par.
Kent required 294 to win @5.88 RPO it should have been easy chase against extremely inexperienced bowling attack and in spite of the flat deck, all but loanee Sam Wood can be pleased with their efforts.
Hayes (City End) and Wood (Beckenham End) opened the bowling. Kent got off to a confident start. In 6th over, Wood went 16 Bell Drummond hitting him for four fours in five balls. Dawkins (8) was caught at short third man by Wood off Hayes; 36 for 1 in the 7th over. After bowling three overs for 27 Wood was replaced by James. Kent 55 for 1 off 10 overs.
Hatton-Lowe, unluckily dropped for the game at Farington game, replaced Hayes for the 11th over. He varied his pace well and bowled some rapid deliveries. Bell-Drummond (44) was caught at long leg by Farhan off Hatton-Lowe, 75 for 2 in the 15th over. Northeast and Finch added 115 in 21.4 overs as the home side seemed to be heading for a comfortable victory.
Farhan replaced by James in the 18th overs and bowled well initially his first six overs going for 16. Kent reached 100 in the 20th over.
Wood returned for the 23rd over and conceded a further 18 off three overs before making way for McCann (3-0-22-0). Northeast reached his 50 off 67 balls with a single off Farhan. Farhan 7th over and the 30th of the innings went for 14 including a six over long off by Finch. Finch reached his 50 off 61 balls with Hayes and James returning to the bowling attack. Northeast (73) pulled a short ball from Hayes with Hameed holding on to a stinging one-handed catch at mid-wicket, 190 for 3 in the 36th over. Finch and Benjamin then added 66 in 8.4 overs. Wood (8 0 59 0) returned for a further two overs but did not grasp his opportunity to impress – his figures over two games 15-0-97-0. Kent reaching 200 in the 39th over. Kent 216 for 3 off 40 overs requiring 78 off 10 overs.
Hatton-Lowe returned for the 41st over and went for eight and Farhan went for four in the following over. Finch hit two boundaries off Hatton-Lowe, nine off the 43rd over. Kent targeted Farhan who conceded 17 off the 44th over including 4, 6 and 4 off Farhan off successive balls the six clearing the sightscreen and going out off the ground. Forty required off 6 overs. It should have been a cake walk against the inexperienced attack.
Hatton-Lowe went for two off the 45th over and dismissed Finch (88 off 98 balls, 8x4, 1x6) caught on the square leg ropes by Tahir, 256 for 4 in the 45th over. Hayes only went for six in the next over, 32 required off 4 overs. James went for 8 in the 47th over and Hayes (10 0 45 3) continued to perform well going for three in the 48th over and having Singh (4) caught by James at long on.
Kent now needed 21 off two overs with James, Notts only capped bowler in the eleven to bowl the penultimate over. It was the first time in the entire match you thought Notts had got a chance to win the game. However, James’ (10-0-62-0) forte is not to bowl the “death” overs and he bowled the most expensive over of the match going for 19. Benjamin hit him for a four and a two and then a poor delivery was dispatched for six over mid-wicket to reach his 50 off 32 balls. The last ball, a wide long hop, went for a six over long off by Stewart; the game all but won.
Hatton-Lowe conceded singles by Benjamin and Stewart off the first two balls of the 50th over, the winning run completed before the ball reached the ropes. Kent had won the contest at 18:26 - so near but so far for Notts. Hameed having the very difficult task to juggle his bowling troops had done as well as possible in very trying circumstances. Hatton-Lowe (9.2-0-51-2) and Hayes in particular stood out. Farhan (9-0-51-0) who bowled well initially went for 35 off his final 3 overs as Kent batsmen targeted the 18-year-old. Kent 294 for 5 off 49.2 overs with Benjamin on 55 (off 34 balls, 4x4, 2x6) and Stewart on 8. An entertaining game on a scorching day although sadly very few Notts supporters were in attendance. The ease of wicket underlined by the fact no batsmen on either side was bowled, lbw or caught behind and the fact there was a hardly an appeal all day.
Notts, decimated by injuries and Hundred call-ups, can take heart from the performances of their youngsters and the closeness of the defeat ensured Notts remained in second place, above a further three teams on net run rate. With Hutton likely to return against Northants at Chesterfield on Friday a stronger team should take to the field. MAG

The signing of Tayyab Tahir might strengthen the batting line-up, although the young man (33) will be stepping-up from Lincs Premier league standard of late, playing with Woodhall Spa (one of Matt Carter's former haunts). Tahir is known to The General, so perhaps the conflcted DoC has been completely missed out of this loop. You do have to wonder about Sam Seecharan and Travis Holland's merits however.
On what is likely to be less bowler friendly than any surface we've played on so far this year in the MBC, shoring-up the batting makes sense for Beckenham. Tayyab Tahir hasn't played a List A game since December.
I don't think that there is anyone else left to sit on the bus.

From the information vacuum that is Trent Bridge, we have learnt that:
Jack Haynes is aiming for a Championship return
Ben Slater is likewise hoping to be fit for a Championship return
Rob Lord is ruled out for the rest of the season
Conor McKerr, remember him, is out for the rest of the season too
Joe Pocklington is being assessed as to severity of his foot stress fracture
George Munsey has gone back to join Scotland
Liam Patterson-White will be Sunrising on Sunday
Dillon Pennington is at the mercy of the Welsh fire brigade who have a fixture the day before
Stone, Duckett, Moores, Clarke, Tongue have all been turning out for their franchise masters, any availability would come as a surprise
At Farington, Kyle Verrerynne took a couple blows, one to the upper body and another to the hand; both halting play. What if he's had an adverse reaction to either of those?
What about about Francis Moore, I hear no one call, well he's left the club - it is believed.
The General has been dealt a bum hand by the DoC and by circumstances, without some further recruitment or miraculous recovery, we might be struggling to fill the bus for the trip to Beckenham.

Its not far from the train station. Good parking. Lovely venue and close to shops/eateries if your not interested in what's available inside the ground.
Welbeck had its Day sadly
As a lot of the expected attendees will be Notts members, I would imagine the early day ticket take-up has been very modest with locals likely to affiliate with Derbyshire. Welbeck might be old hat now, but at least it's still in the right county. Chesterfield has a lot going for it, but it just happens in be located in a rival county.
DeleteI agree and support the issues you raise. Notts do need a better option though. My wife plays for the Ladies at Welbeck and gets the impression the club does less both in promoting the games and facilities wise each year. It’s basically a dust bowl with little shelter or food outlets and nowhere near possible outside outlets. Dreadful. Okay for the Notts leagues but not a county fixture.

Not been there for ages but great memories - admittedly thick end of 40 years ago - of tendulkar hitting Bishop for a 6 into the lake, and Neil Fairbrother in 1989 getting a massive hundred despite breaking his finger early in his innings. The pitch in those days was fast and bouncy- the council provided the ground staff (Docs was head groundsman!) - and to improve standards the catering staff were told not to leave the teabag in the tea that they sold.

I believe the downgrading of food outlets and no executive members tent is down to Notts CCC cost cutting not Welbeck CC.

Welbeck did make errors with the catering outlets this season. One cancelled due to being already booked elsewhere . Another forgotten to be notified.
Anyway looking fwd to chesterfield even if in the wrong County.
Yes the ladies and young cricketers did a superb job litter picking and selling raffle tickets,did wonder why the pizza van wasnt there Thursday.

DeleteI had a chat with an ex miner at Welbeck regarding Notts and Derby, he said "up here we were all just miners, we didn't go in for the usual county tribalism", what a grown up view.

No such problems at Chesterfield . I'm from Notts and I play football for the over 50s cfc plus family live there. Iv never come across any hostility only the odd silly Chant when Notts county or mansfield play there.
