NOTTS WIN AT THE BECK

against a mixed experience Somerset eleven

Notts won their opening Metro Bank game today against Somerset by 4 wickets with 5.2 overs to spare.

Notts won the toss and inserted Somerset on a warm day with intermittent sunshine. A crowd of around 1,000 were in attendance at Welbeck. Notts were without Jack Haynes who has a quad injury - the first time that he has missed a Notts game following 94 consecutive appearances in championship, T20 and 50 over cricket. Somerset were missing Lewis Goldsworthy due to concussion and decimated by Hundred call ups had three List A debutants. Jake Ball captained them on his home club ground.

Off the fifth delivery of the match Archie Vaughan (4) was caught behind by Verreynne off Hutton (Charlie French End); 4 for 1. Hayes opened with two maidens. Perera the Cavaliers and Carrington CC left-handed batsman on a short-term contract with Somerset found the ropes twice in succession off Hayes in the 8th over. Somerset 37 for 1 off 10 overs.

After bowling an opening spell of 5 2 22 0 Hayes was replaced by Lord from the Spion Kop End. Lord bowled 3 overs for 21 and was then replaced by James. The ever-reliable Hutton (9 1 26 1) was replaced by Farhan Ahmed – he did not bowl again. The 27-year-old chunky Perera, who looked a steady bat reached his 50 off 72 balls with a single off James in the 22nd over. Somerset 104 for 1 off 25 overs at the drinks break.

Straight after the break, McCann proved to be a golden arm having Perera (58 off 84 balls, 8x4) caught and bowled low down to his left off his fourth delivery (106 for 2). The 2nd wicket had added 102 in 25 overs.

Lammonby and Thomas added 60 in 11 overs for the third wicket. Lammonby reached his 50 off 80 balls with a single off Farhan in the 31st over. Lord and James replaced McCann (5 0 23 1) and Farhan (9 0 49 0) for the 36th and 37th overs respectively. James made the breakthrough having Thomas (27) caught by Pocklington at deep square leg (166 for 3). James (6 0 36 1) conceded 14 in the 39th over with consecutive fours for Lammonby and one for 23-year-old Johnny Connell a short-term signing from Berkshire. Somerset 196 for 3 off 40 overs.

Pocklington conceded 8 off the 41st over, his first over of the innings. Somerset completely lost their way from this point only adding 54 in their last nine overs of the innings.

Lammonby (92 off 109 balls; 8x4) was caught low down by Martindale at long leg off Lord (8 0 55 1); 201 for 4 in the 42nd over. Connell (24) was caught at long off by McCann off Pocklington; 231 for 5 in the 45th over. Roberts (18) was caught at deep mid-on by James who took the steepling catch off Hayes; 238 for 6 in the 46th over. Two balls later, Pocklington bowled Pretorius (4); 238 for 7 in the 47th over. Leach (4) was stumped by Verreynne off Pocklington (5-0-28-3 – a joint career best); 250 for 8 off 49 overs. Shaw (0) was caught by Martindale at long leg off Hayes (8 2 37 2); 251 for 9. Church lofted a straight four off the last delivery of the innings – only the second boundary since the 40th over of the innings. Somerset 258 for 9 off 50 overs. Church 13 not out and Ball 1 not out.

Ball (Spion Kop End) and Shaw opened the bowling for Somerset. Shaw went for 14 off the 4th over including three boundaries for Slater. Slater was dropped on 15 above his head by Thomas off Ball. Slater then hit the first six of the day over square leg; 15 off the 5th over. Slater (25), playing rather loosely, was caught at point by Leach off Ball, 43 for 1 in the 7th over. Notts reached 61 for 1 off 10 overs - Martindale getting two fours off consecutive Shaw deliveries in the 10th over.

Vaughan and Pretorius replaced Shaw and Ball (8-1-38-1) for the 12th and 13th overs respectively. McCann on 37 was dropped near his boot laces by Ball at mid-on off Pretorius in the 15th over. A poor cross batted shot saw Martindale (21) dismissed caught at mid-on by Ball off Vaughan (; 90 for 2 in the 16th over. McCann reached his 50 off 57 balls with a single off Pretorius in the 19th over. Kian Roberts (2-0-7-0) came on for the 20th over and dropped McCann on 51 off his own bowling - McCann driving the ball hard and low the 19-year-old from Truro failing to take the chance.

Leach (5-0-36-0) came on for the 21st over and proved expensive. Lammonby was introduced for the 24th over. Notts 138 for 2 off 25 overs.

In the 26th over Roberts slipped over whilst fielding the ball and had to leave the field with a leg injury. In the 27th over, McCann reverse swept Leach for successive fours: 10 off the over. Pretorius returned for the 28th over and he dismissed McCann (70 off 82 balls; 11x4) who top edged him to substitute James Theedom at mid-on; 150 for 3. The third wicket stand had added 60 in 12.2 overs – McCann had registered a List A best.

The expensive Shaw (8-0-60-0) returned for the 31st over. Thomas came on for the 34th over. A pulled four by Hameed to square leg took him to 50 off 54 balls in the 35th over. Notts 221 for 3 off 40 overs – slow left armer Thomas (4-0-23-0) going for 10 in the 40th over.

Hameed and Verreynne, on his List A debut for Notts, had added 71 in 13 overs when Pretorius came on for the 41st over and Verreynne (27) gave it away pulling him to Connell at backward square leg; 221 for 4. Notts went into a mini panic following this dismissal. Lammonby came back for the 42nd over and conceded a single. James on 2 skied Pretorius and keeper Ben Church, the 18-year-old Taunton School pupil, dropped the simplest of chances running towards square leg. Later in the over Hameed (66 off 79 balls; 5x4) skied the South African this time Thomas took the catch at mid-on, 226 for 5 in the 43rd over. Pocklington fell for a golden duck caught by keeper Church off Pretorius (226 for 6). Notts had lost 3 wickets for 5 runs in 13 balls and James had been dropped off the easiest of chances.

Suddenly the pressure came off. James, cashing in on his good fortune, hit successive fours off Lammonby (4-0-28-0) – one boundary straight and the other a pull to the point ropes. James then hit him for four through mid-on. A wide followed. His last ball was short one which James hit aerially to the mid-wicket ropes; 19 off the 44th over. Pretorius bowled a no ball James hitting the free hit for six over cow corner. Lord hit Pretorius (9.4 2 41 4) for four through point. Next ball at 17:51, Notts won in an anti-climactic fashion via a wide from Pretorius. Notts 259-6 off 44.4 overs with James on 29* and Lord on 6*.
