WINNING RUN ENDS, CAUGHT OUT BY YORKSHIRE'S BESS

Outlaws drop to third seed, so face sixth seeded Surrey on Wednesday

Notts lost their final group game at Leeds this afternoon by 18 runs their first defeat in nine games.

Yorkshire won the toss and elected to bat on a slow pitch helping the spinners but with short boundaries. Dillon Pennington came into the Notts Eleven with Mohammad Amir rested.

Notts lost the game in the powerplay allowing the Yorkshire openers Luxton and Lyth to pile up 83 runs unbroken. The seamers bowling poorly. The two absent Mos badly missed.

Luxton hit Pennington (Kirkstall Lane End) for a legside four and Lyth lofted him for four over mid-on, 10 off the opening over. Lyth hit Stone for six over backward square leg and Luxton hit him for consecutive fours through extra cover and straight, 16 off the 2nd over. Lyth pulled Fernando for six over square leg, 11 off the 3rd over. Luxton hit Pennington (2 0 26 0) for six over long on and next ball smashed him for four through extra cover. The third ball was a straight off drive for four, 16 off the 4th over. Pennington did not bowl again. Lyth hit Linde for six over extra cover, seven off the 5th over. Lyth smashed Fernando for a six over long on. The second ball went for four through backward point. The third ball went for six over mid-wicket After bowling a wide, Lyth edged Fernando for four through third man; 23 off the over. Yorkshire 83 for 0 off 6 overs. This passage of play cost Notts the game.

Lyth got to 50 off 24 balls with a single off Linde, four off the 7th over. Next over Lyth (52 off 27 balls, 3x4, 5x6), going for a legside shot, was lbw to Howell (89 for 1), four off the 8th over. Luxton (38 off 23 balls, 5x4, 1x6) was caught behind by Moores off Patterson-White (93 for 2), three plus a leg bye off the 9th over. Root (2) bottom edged Howell to Pennington at backward point (95 for 3), three off the over. Yorkshire 98 for 3 off 10 overs.

Patterson-White went for two off the 11th over. Bairstow hit Howell for a four through point, seven off the 12th over. Bairstow reverse swept Linde for consecutive fours, 11 off the 13th over. Bairstow hit Howell for four through backward point. Ali smashed Howell (4 0 35 2) for six over long on and next ball hit him for four through extra cover. Ali deposited the fifth ball for a straight six, 21 off the 14th over. Ali (20) was caught on the mid-wicket ropes low down by Stone off Patterson-White (142 for 4). Revis (1) playing across the line was lbw to a delivery from Patterson-White that kept low, 144 for 5 off 15 overs.

Bess went for a golden duck getting a thin edge to Stone, Moores taking the catch (145 for 6), 4 off the 16th over. Moores with 87 T20 dismissals for Notts has now taken the stumpers yellow jersey off Chris Read (86 dismissals)!

Patterson-White (4 0 13 3) went for three off his last over. Bairstow (32) was bowled by Fernando (3 0 42 1; 158 for 7), eight off the 18th over. Umpire Gough lost count of the balls bowled - the over containing a wide and a no ball but only five legitimate balls. As a result, the scoreboard went into meltdown and never updated for the rest of the innings. This caused mass confusion for the crowd and the amateur scorer in the stand went in to a mass panic - his Notts CCC Bill and Ben hat revolving continuously.

Notts had fought back well only 76 runs had been scored in the 12 overs since the powerplay.

Tye (1) was comically bowled by Linde. Going for a legside heave he not only missed the ball but his bat came flying out of his hands (159 for 8). However Yorkshire had the last laugh adding 34 runs off the last 11 deliveries of the innings as some buffet bowling was served up. Hasan Ali (13) hit Linde for successive sixes over square leg and mid-wicket but fell next ball caught at short third man by Fernando off Linde (4 0 36 2), 14 off the 19th over. Van Beek hit Stone (3 0 40 1) for two legside sixes four balls apart. Van Beek (28) was run out by Howell, throwing the ball from mid-on to Moores, going for two off the last ball. Howell had picked up Stone's shy at the non-strikers stumps which missed. Yorkshire 193 all out off 20 overs. Chohan 0 not out. Patterson-White the stand out bowler with career best T20 figures – completely out bowling his slow left-arm teammate. McCann should have been utilised the seamers proving too expensive.

Hasan Ali (Kirkstall Lane End) went for eight including five leg byes off the opening over. Clarke hit Moeen for four fours in the second over, the first through backward point and the next three through the extra cover region, 17 off the 2nd over. Moeen did not bowl again. Tye went for three off the third over. Munsey (9) cover drove van Beek for four but was then caught at mid-on by the juggling Tye off van Beek (32 for 1). Haynes came in to loud boos from the Yorkshire crowd after they thought he had earlier touched the rope in their innings whilst “stopping” a boundary. He was to become Notts joint top scorer of the match. Seven off the 4th over. Haynes hit Hasan Ali for four through long leg. Clarke (23) off drove Hasan Ali for four but mistimed him and was caught by Root at extra cover (44 for 2), 10 off the 5th over. McCann (1) lasted only three balls being caught and bowled by Bess (46 for 3). Haynes hit Bess for four through extra cover, eight off the over. Notts 53 for three off 6 overs.

Moores (2) was caught on the square leg ropes by Bess off Tye (56 for 4), three off the 7th over. Haynes hit Root for 4 through mid-wicket, eight off the 8th over. Chohan went for five off the 9th over. Haynes swept Bess (2 0 16 1) for four through backward square leg. Notts 78 for 4 off 10 overs needing another 116.

Linde hit Chohan for 6 over square leg. Haynes reverse swept Chohan for four through third man, 14 off the 11th over. Linde (25) put Root into the empty second tier of the Football Stand and next ball hit another six this time over mid-wicket. Next ball he smashed the ball at high speed straight to Bess at extra cover (105 for 5). This was the final nail in the coffin, if the fierce drive was a foot either side of Bess the ball would have gone for four. Unlucky!

Two balls later, Haynes (37 off 25 balls, 5x4) was caught on the backward square leg ropes by Bess off Root (3 0 35 2); 106 for 6 off 12 overs. Patterson-White was bowled for a 2-ball duck by Chohan (107 for 7), two off the 13th over. Notts appeared to be sinking to a heavy defeat but Howell and Pennington added 57 for the eighth wicket in 5.2 overs before Notts lost their last three wickets in 11 balls

Pennington hit Root for six over mid-wicket and a four through backward square leg, 13 plus a leg bye off the 14th over. Howell edged Chohan (4 0 34 1) for four and cut him for four through point, 13 off the 15th over. Pennington on 15 was dropped by Bess on the square leg ropes off van Beek (2 0 18 1). Pennington hit the next ball for six over mid-wicket, 11 off the 16th over. Pennington hit Hasan Ali for six over mid-wicket; 11 off the 17th over. Pennington (37) edged a four off Tye but his luck ran out as was caught next ball at long on by Revis off Tye (164 for 8). Pennington had equalled his career best of 37 made earlier this season at Old Trafford, although that innings was undefeated. Eight off the 18th over.

Stone (1) was bowled by Hasan Ali (165 for 9). Howell hit Hasan Ali (4 0 30 2) for an extra cover four; six off the 19th over. Notts needed 23 to win off the last 6 balls. Howell hit Tye (3.3 0 18 3) for a straight four, but fell next ball caught at long leg by Bess – his fifth catch of the innings – a Tyke record. Notts 175 all out off 19.3 overs with Fernando on 1 not out.

A disappointing end to an unexpectedly successful T20 group stage campaign.

Notts finished top of the Northern Group but had the worst record of the three group winners and were therefore third seeds. They face a home quarter final against sixth seeds Surrey on Wednesday afternoon. A tough draw! Yorkshire reward for their win in his home tie against the Wurzels! MAG
