FREDDIE LEADS THE WAY TO COMFORTABLE WIN AT OUR NEW HOME
Notts comfortably beat Northants by 6 wickets with 20 balls to spare in front of a crowd of around 1,200 at their “borrowed” home of Queens Park, Chesterfield. It was their tenth white ball victory at “home” on the trot.
Northants won the toss and elected to bat on a good batting surface with a fast outfield. The visitors gave a debut to former Notts man Sammy King. Notts were given a huge boost with Hutton and Pennington included in the line-up. Hatton-Lowe and Wood making way.
Hutton (Lake End) and Pennington shared the new ball and the two returnees made an impact from the off. Hutton opened up with a maiden and there were no runs off the bat from the first two overs from Pennington – just a solitary wide conceded. Procter dominated the early scoring taking two boundaries apiece off the 3rd over (bowled by Hutton) and the 6th over (bowled by Pennington). In the 7th over, Miller (1) was caught behind by Verreynne off Hutton; 25 for 1. Northamptonshire 32 for 1 off 10 overs.
After bowling 5-1-17-0 in his opening spell, Pennington was replaced by Hayes for the 12th over. James came on and had King (10) lbw with his second delivery – a nip backer; 46 for 2 in the 13th over. Aussie McSweeney, found his stride from the off, hitting Hayes for four boundaries in the same over; 16 off the 14th over. Hayes after bowling two overs for 24 was immediately replaced by Farhan. The 50 partnership between Procter and McSweeney came up in 43 balls via a straight six by Procter off Farhan; 11 plus a leg bye off the 20th over.
Procter got to his 50 off 66 balls with a single off Farhan in the 22nd over. Hayes returned for the 23rd over. Procter (53 off 72 balls, 6x4, 1x6), attempting a reverse sweep, was lbw to Farhan; 120 for 3 in the 24th over. The third wicket stand had added 74 in 11.3 overs the only period of the contest where the Steelbacks got on top of the Notts bowling.
Some inspired captaincy from Hameed saw him introduce Martindale for the 27th over. With his fifth delivery of this year’s competition he ripped out McSweeney's (49 off 44 balls, 8x4) middle stump with a peach of a delivery that moved in; 136 for 4. Northants key batsman out.
After bowling a seven over spell Farhan was replaced by McCann for the 30th over. In his second over McCann had the charging Van der Merwe (8) stumped by Verreynne; 151 for 5 in the 32nd over. Bartlett and Keogh dug Northants out of real trouble by sharing a 6th wicket partnership of 70 in 12.1 overs. Martindale (4 0 20 1) made way for Hutton for the 35th over who conceded nine runs in a brief two over burst. Pennington replaced McCann (3 0 9 1) for the following over. James replaced Hutton for the 39th over. Northamptonshire 193 for 5 off 40 overs. They only scored 66 off the last 10 overs as the Notts bowlers closed down the innings well.
Farhan returned for the 42nd over. Bartlett reached his 50 off 49 balls with a six over backward square leg off James (8-0-37-1); 8 off the 43rd over. Bartlett (55 off 54 balls, 4x4, 1x6) holed out to McCann on the long off ropes off Farhan (10 0 52 2), 221 for 6; 10 off the 44th over. Hutton (9-1-36-1) returned for the 45th over and went for seven but never bowled his 10th over. Hayes immediately replaced him and had Keogh (33) caught at long on by McCann, 237 for 7, four off the 47th over. McManus was dropped on 13 by Hameed low down at short fine leg off Pennington, four off the 48th over. McManus (15) was caught at deep mid-wicket via a well-judged catch by Martindale off Hayes (6 0 51 2), 242 for 8; 10 off the 49th over – Hayes’ last four overs going for 27. Pennington (10-1-44-0) conceded seven off the last over. Northamptonshire 259 for 8 off 50 overs (Guthrie 14*, Weatherall 6*). A good collective bowling effort had kept Northants to a chasable total.
Weatherall (Lake End) and Guthrie opened the bowling. Martindale (18) hit three consecutive fours of Weatherall. But was caught behind by McManus off a widish delivery from Guthrie in the following over; 22 for 1 in the 4th over. Procter came on for the 9th over and conceded nine, McCann hitting him for consecutive fours. Tahir (8) was bowled by left-armer Guthrie who got the delivery to moved back in; 64 for 2 in the 10th over. Hameed was dropped on 0 by Bartlett at slip off Guthrie, the ball going for 4. Notts 68 for 2 off 10 overs. The dropped chance swung the game, McCann and Hameed adding 101 in 22 overs to put Notts in control
McSweeney brought himself on for the 14th over and went for 14 including two fours for McCann one off a free hit – his off breaks not utilised again in the contest. Next over, a single for McCann off Procter saw him to 50 in 50 balls. Miller came on for the 16th over with Notts reaching 100. Chahal was introduced for the 17th over. McCann reverse swept Chahal for 6 over backward point; 10 off the 21st over. Keogh came on for the 23rd over and bowled 2-0-14-0. Notts 143 for 2 off 25 overs.
Guthrie and Procter (9-0-34-0) returned for the 26th and 27th overs respectively as Notts made steady accumulation towards their target. McCann was by this stage having problems with cramp. Chahal returned for the 30th over with Hameed getting to 50 off 70 balls with a single. Hameed (51 off 72 balls, 4x4) was caught at mid-wicket by Bartlett off Chalal, 165 for 3 in the 32nd over. Verreynne hit Chahal for six over long on; 14 off the 34th over. Miller returned for the 35th over. McCann (91 off 105 balls, 11x4, 1x6) attempting a reverse sweep was lbw to Chalal (10-0-56-2); 192 for 4 in the 36th over. McCann’s outstanding innings, full of sweeps, was a List A best and along with his wicket and two catches had taken Notts to the verge of victory. James joined Verreynne and added an unbroken 69 in 11.3 overs to take Notts home.
The 200 came up in the 38th over via a four through mid-wicket by James off Chalal. Notts 217 for 4 off 40 overs.
James hit Weatherall (6-0-44-0) for six over mid-wicket; 9 off the 43rd over. Guthrie (10-0-52-2) came back for the 44th over and two overs later went for 12 including successive boundaries for James. A lofted on-drive from James (45*) off Miller (8.4-0-42-0) saw Notts home. Notts 261-4 off 46.4 overs with Verreynne on 39*. Notts remain second in the table. MAG

Yesterday the Surrey MBC match at the Oval got a crowd of over 8k. Next week Notts will travel to the Oval agin in this competition:
1 Will a potential play-off qualifer draw a larger crowd?
2 Notts were restricted to 1 match at the H*ndred hosting venue of Trent Bridge this year, how is it that the ECB have allowed Surrey 2 matches at their H*ndred hosting venue?
3 Chesterfield has to be a success tomorrow, as a further restriction on matches at Trent Bridge is on the horizon and where else can we take a match, Welbeck is probably at its limit and Grantham is probably off the cards for the foreseeable future.

A home away from home? Or is it more of the opposite, as there certainly won't be any home advantage, as Notts rarely appear there and with Ben Slater injured, only Ben Martindale has much experience of the ground, I would suspect.
It's very generous of Chesterfield CC to offer their facilities to the Outlaws; I hope that the fixture gets the support it deserves and the day goes well financially. Welbeck CC's two matches would have suffered further if there had been a third fixture on the horizon and there does appear to be little alternative within the county boundaries. Grantham is now a dead duck and Cleethorpes is a long way to go for a home fixture for just one day. Hence, the looking towards the dark side again, which did flop in 2021, when Notts used the County Ground Derby for a home fixture, on a number of levels.
Once the ECB gets its way and none of the H*ndred venues are used for the MBC, then we will need to call upon our neighbours even more or invest in a new ground as Lancashire have done with Farington.
I guess we'll have squad news once The General has rallied enough fit troops, Friday is a long way off yet.
Hi there, does anyone know if this game is on the season ticket. The website is a bit ambiguous as it sets out ticket prices but makes no reference to season tickets being valid. As expected, a call to the ticket office is not being answered given the glamour for test tickets.

Jon, yes you will gain access to Queen's Park free of charge on presenting your 2026 Notts CCC membership card tomorrow. It is a Notts "home" fixture.

ReplyDeleteBit of a niche comment but when Derbyshire play at Chesterfield (and indeed in Derby), dogs are allowed. When Nottinghamshire play at Chesterfield (or at Welbeck or Trent Bridge), dogs (other than assistance dogs) aren't allowed. Who is the dog hating crackpot in the Nottinghamshire set up prohibiting chilled, friendly dogs from having a day at the cricket? SMJ
ReplyDeleteDogs are allowed at Championship games at Derbyshire home fixtures. Indeed the club even offers dog memberships. Derbyshire however don't allow dogs into T20 matches at Derby, presumably because of the larger number of attendees (humans). The one day cup would be a grey area, but I would imagine canines attending at outgrounds if not County HQ.

Having nerdily read up about it previously, Derbyshire definitely do allow dogs at one day matches both at Derby and elsewhere. Interesting to know that there are a long line of crackpots! SMJ

ReplyDeleteA lot of people like dogs but a fair percentage of the population don’t . I am far from happy to see dogs in restaurants and being treated as human instead of being an animal . Last week I saw a large excited dog sitting on a soft chair in a pub restaurant and eating food off a plate placed onto the dining table . Surely not acceptable?
Hygiene standards vary and expectations of hygiene standards similarly vary from human to human. Dogs in restaurants isn't to everyone's taste. I would suggest hygiene standards should be set/expected at the highest level possible for eating establishments. Dogs by their nature are not hygienic, with all the best will in the world. Therefore, is it friendly to dogs to bring them into a food environment and to torment the animal with sights and smells of food. So dog friendly is anything but that.
DeleteIMO it's fine bringing dogs into traditional pub settings. As for cricket grounds, I like seeing dogs in this environment and Trent Bridge is the poorer for not allowing canines.

I'm with 83notout re slobbery dogs in restaurants at tables. Luckily we have a very handsome and charming greyhound who just flops down and has a long kip. Would love to be able to take him to Nottinghamshire county matches. Smj
DeleteWhat gets me is where it says "well behaved dogs allowed", as though they employ a Barbara Woodhouse to be the judge of the dogs' standard of behaviour.

If cats are permitted, Korky, the term should refer to the discrimination against dogs, so doggist is possibly the word you're clawing for.

All that deafening music and banal cheerleading . If the poor thing is “ dog tired” then how does it tell its owner “!please don’t take me next time!” Dogs want to be out and about chasing balls - not watching them being delivered at 90 mph down a 22 yard strip.
