Day 4

NOTTS TAKE 5 BONUS POINTS

as all matches in division 1 are drawn

Notts had a profitable last day in Birmingham today gaining a further four bonus points. They took 13 from the drawn match and now lead the championship by four points over Somerset. Warwickshire took 10 points from the fixture and lie third in the table, 8 points behind Notts.

A small crowd gathered at Edgbaston on what turned out to be a predominantly cloudy day.

Clarke got a single off the first delivery of the day bowled by Bamber (Pavilion End) to bring up the Notts 2nd batting point. Hannon-Dalby bowled the second over of the day. Clarke brought up his 150 in 219 balls with a two off Hannon-Dalby  in the 86th over. Sheat hit Bamber for six over the short square leg boundary in the 87th over. When Clarke (150 off 221 balls, 24x4) was caught at second slip by Yates off Bamber (3 for 74). Clarke had made the testing pitch look easy to bat on. His innings outstanding.

Notts immediately declared on 325 for 8 after 88.1 overs with Sheat 45 not out. They reckoned sensibly to elect to get the three bowling points rather than taking more time out the game trying to chase a third batting point.

Stone (Pavilion End) had a confident leg before shout against Yates turned down off the first delivery of the Bears innings. Yates then hit him for three successive boundaries, 12 off the opening over. Pennington was his new ball partner. Yates (12) was lbw shouldering arms and playing no shot to Stone, 16 for 1 in the 5th over. Sheat came on for the 8th over and bowled well without luck. Young (13) got a thick edge to Stone, Verreynne  taking the catch, 29 for 2 in the 11th over. Stone picked up his third wicket when he had Hain (8) lbw, 43 for 3 in the 13th over. Pennington replaced the outstanding Stone for the 15th over. Martindale came on for the 18th over. Pennington bowled the last over before lunch and had Mousley lbw for 20. Lunch was immediately taken. Warwickshire 64 for 4 off 18.2 overs with Jani on 4.

Pennington and Martindale continued to bowl after lunch. Barnard, played a Pennington delivery to Clarke at mid-wicket, non-striker Jani (18) charged down the pitch and was sent back but was run out failing to make his ground as Pennington broke the stumps, 82 for 5 in the 25th over. Barnard (10) was lbw to a Martindale delivery that kept low, 89 for 6 in the 28th over. A maiden first class wicket for Martindale. Stone replaced Pennington for the 31st over - Thompson hitting his opening delivery of his new spell for six over backward square leg. Sheat came on for the 32nd over. A leaden footed Davies (3) was caught by Verreynne off Stone, 114 for 7 in the 37th over. Thompson and Booth went for their shots adding 33 in 4.2 overs. Booth pulled Stone for six over square leg, 11 plus a leg bye off the 39th over. Booth hit Sheat for consecutive boundaries, nine off the 40th over. Thompson (26) had his stumps detonated by Stone, 147 for 8 in the 41st over. Pennington  returned for the 43rd over. Patterson-White came on for the first time in the 44th over. Warwickshire 163 for 8 off 45 overs at tea with Booth on 30 and Bamber on 11.

A shower arrived at tea time and play recommenced at 1612 with three overs lost. Patterson-White continued to bowl from the City End. Sheat replaced Pennington from the Pavilion End for the 53rd over. Top scorer Booth (46) was caught and bowled by Patterson-White; 181 for 9 in the 54th over. At 1644, Bamber (13) was the last wicket to fall, an excellent catch by James running back from mid-on grabbing the chance low down by his ankles the ball hanging in the swirling wind. A deserved debut wicket for Fraser Sheat. Warwickshire 185 all out off 54.1 overs (Hannon-Dalby 4*); 140 behind Notts. The rain in retrospect could have cost Notts a victory. It would have been interesting if Notts had bowled first on Friday as I would have backed them to bowl Warwick out for a smallish total. Their bowling much more impressive than Warwickshire. Stone, bowling  fast and pitching the ball up, outstanding once more with figures of 13 4 49 5. All Notts bowling had proved testing and the fielding was top rate throughout. 

Technically Notts had six minutes to bat but both sides immediately agreed to the draw.  

After being on the road since 28th July, Notts finally head to Trent Bridge to face Leicestershire starting on Wednesday. Its certainly been a tiring month for all involved! MAG

CLARKE SHINES IN THE BIRMINGHAM GLOOM

After yesterday's washout, 82 overs were possible today between the showers and the bad light interruptions at Edgbaston. Notts will be the happier of the two sides having been inserted in helpful conditions. With plenty of movement with cloudy overheads throughout. Warwickshire will be disappointed they did not bowl Notts out. Notts star of the day was undoubtedly Joe Clarke who became the first man to 1,000 runs this season scoring a high class 146 not out off 212 balls with 24 fours. Notts closing on 299 for 7.


Warwickshire won the toss and elected to bowl. The boundary on the Reabank side of the pitch was only 47 yards in front of a near empty Edgbaston.

Fraser Sheat came in for his Notts debut and Lyndon James came back into team after his side strain. Out of the team went Slater (still suffering with his hamstring) and Hutton (rested).

Bamber (Pavilion End) and Hannon-Dalby opened the bowling. Martindale hit three boundaries off Bamber's second over, 14 off the over. In the 4th over, Hameed was dismissed for a 10 ball duck caught by Yates at second slip off a widish Hannon-Dalby delivery, 16 for 1. McCann, playing down the wrong line, was bowled by Bamber for another 10 ball duck, 17 for 2 off 7 overs.

Ben Martindale, in only his second first-class class game, impressed as he added 88 in 22 overs with Clarke for the third wicket.

Hannon-Dalby conceded 13 in the 12th over, two boundaries for Clarke and one for Martindale.

Barnard and Booth came on as first change bowlers for the 13th and 14th overs respectively. The 50 partnership came up in 82 balls via four byes off Barnard in the 21st over. Thompson replaced Booth for the 22nd over. Bamber returned for the 25th over.

Martindale got to his 50 off 72 balls and Notts to three figures via a cover driven four off Bamber in the 27th over. Mousley came on just before lunch and removed Martindale (55) lbw with his second delivery. Lunch was immediately taken. Notts 105 for 3 after 29.2 overs with Clarke on 43.

There was a short heavy shower during the interval and play recommenced at 1400 with three overs lost. Bamber and Booth were bowling in tandem. Clarke got to his 50 off 92 balls with a two off Booth in the 34th over. Haynes (10) was caught at second slip by Yates diving to his right off Bamber, 122 for 4 in the 35th over. There was a long stoppage while Verreynne received treatment on his hand having been struck by Bamber in the 37th over which went for 11 runs. Barnard returned for the 39th over. Verreynne (14) was adjudged lbw to Barnard to a ball that kept low but appeared to be drifting down leg side, 148 for 5 in the 41st over. Notts in trouble once more but Clarke and James were to add 73 in 23 overs for the 6th wicket to frustrate the Bears.

Hannon-Dalby returned for the 42nd over. Barnard conceded 13 in the 45th over, two boundaries for Clarke and one for James. Rain stopped play at 1514 with Notts 172 for 5 off 46.4 overs with Clarke on 81 and James on 8.
Edgbaston kept dodging the really heavy showers that were visible from the Tom Dolley suite and which were depositing a huge amount of water in the city centre a mile and half a way.

Play resumed at 1613 with 11 overs lost. In the 52nd over, an offside single for Clarke off Hannon-Dalby took him to 89 and made him the first batsman to score 1,000 first class runs for the season. Notts got to 200 with a four through third man by James off Thompson. An on driven four by Clarke off Thompson took him to his ton off 169 balls in the 58th over.

Booth returned for the 60th over. James (32) attempting to pull a short ball from Booth, top edged him to keeper Davies, 221 for 6 in the 64th over. Clarke took ten off the 69th over including two boundaries. Hannon-Dalby returned for the 72nd over and an edged four for Clarke took Notts to 250 and their only point of the day. Bad light stopped play at 1800 with Notts 253 for 6 off 71.5 overs with Clarke on 131 and Patterson-White on 6. The light appearing to be better than 20 minutes before.

Play restarted at 1828 in bright sunshine with a further 8 overs lost and carried on uninterupted until stumps were drawn at 1912. Patterson-White (9) was caught at point by Mousley off the returning Thompson, 256 for 7 in the 73rd over. Sheat was dropped on 3 by Yates diving to his right at second slip off Bamber in the 75th over. Thompson came on from the 80th over and went for 11 boundaries for both Clarke and Sheat. The latter who cashed in on the drop in the corden played a few impressive shots underlining his first class batting average of 20.

The new ball was taken with Notts 297 for 7 off 80 overs. But Clarke only faced two balls and scored two whereas Sheat failed to add to his unbeaten 27 playing out a maiden from the last over of the day from Thompson. Warwickshire despite being second best today ended up with one more bonus point than Notts, the luck of winning the toss! All the Bears bowlers took wickets but none really stuck out. Clarke the man of the day with his top class unbeaten knock.

The forecast for the last two days is not promising. But neither was today's; confusing the weather app obsessived who had predicted Armageddon by 3pm! MAG

Notts have lost their first full day's play to rain for the first time since 1st July 2024 at Southport.

Lots of rumbles of thunder today and same is still forecast for tomorrow, with its associated precipitation.

Thundery Showers forecast for Thursday covering a wide area of the Midlands. Remember if the umpires hear a clap of thunder, they have to take the players off the field for 30 minutes [after the last rumble]. Indeed, the Met Office have now issued a Yellow Warning for thunderstorms. Thundery showers forecast for Edgbaston on Sunday too.

There's not room for any slip-ups, it's so tight at the top of the division with this round of matches seeing Warwickshire 3rd (130 pts) v Notts 1st (135 pts) and Sussex 5th (108 pts) v Somerset 2nd (133 pts).

Following victory over the perennial pre-season favourites, largely down to a strong team bond and some individual brilliance, the reigning champions travel to Edgbaston for another nerve-shredder.

I've just checked the weather forecast (something that I've become accustomed to not having to do this summer) and for that neck o'th' woods, the met office are suggesting light rain could be possible at just about any point over the four days, without there being any high percentage chance of any precipitation over the period at all.

Can Notts put a fit eleven onto the field?

Will we have enough bowlers to make the most of the perceived conditions at Edgbaston?

Will Warwickshire prepare a slow flat deck to nullify our strengths or will they embrace a shoot-out, winner takes all approach?

Neither county can afford to lose to the other...

Rather than simplify it by making it into a three horse race, which I believe it ain't, as Yorkshire are bigging up their challenge  and I can envisage Sussex having a huge impression yet, not forgetting by inclusion Glamorgan, who might sneak past a few by the end of September.

Owing to the lack of information forthcoming from Trent Bridge, we have to speculate as to the fitness of both Joe Clarke and that of Ben Slater, neither made an appearance at the later stages of the Oval game. Brett Hutton, Olly Stone and Dillon Pennington must be held together by a mixture of muscle tape, elastoplast and duck tape with the relentless rounds of matches for the next month and only a possibility of an extra body coming in towards the last third of games.
