OUTLAW CENTURIONS COMEBACK FROM THE ABYSS AFTER A COAD SPELL

At 18:28 last night, Dillon Pennington hit Ben Cliff for four through the covers to clinch an astonishing three wicket win for Notts over Yorkshire. It meant that Notts had reached a 50 over knockout semi-final for the first time since 2019.

Notts won the toss and elected to bowl on what turned out to be a good batting hybrid pitch which had a bit of pace and bounce in the early stages of both innings. Notts had Jack Haynes back from his quad injury and was making his first Metro Bank appearance of the season. Olly Stone was back from MI London duty. Out went Sam Seecharan and James Hayes.

Hutton (Rugby Stand End) and Pennington (City End) opened the bowling on another day of relentless hot sunshine. The pleasant Clifton Park venue, a 20 minute north westerly walk out of the city, had a crowd of around 2,500 in attendance.

Yorkshire got off to a fast start. In the third over, Lyth hit Hutton for a six the ball being retrieved by the dapperly dressed Notts vice chair on the committee balcony. Hutton having a rare off day. Luxton hit Pennington for three boundaries in the 4^th over. In the fifth over, Lyth got his second six off Hutton, the ball just going over Farhan's head at long leg – 12 runs scored off the over once more. Luxton (13) was caught by Verreynne, diving to his right, off Pennington; 38 for 1 in the 6th over, a wicket maiden. Lyth (26) fell in Pennington's following over caught by Verreynne diving to his left, 43 for 2 in the 8th over. Hutton went for 11 in the 9th over - Bennison hitting him for two fours. Yorkshire 54 for 2 off 10 overs.

James and Stone came on for the 11th and 12th overs respectively. The impressive Will Bennison, the 19-year-old right-hander from Boroughbridge, pulled Stone for six over long leg in the 16th over. With the Huddersfield born Wharton as his partner the runs were coming at a steady rate. When Yorkshire were 99 for 2 off 18.4 overs, James (4.4 0 20 0) pulled up with a side strain, Martindale completed the over. James took no further part in the contest.

Farhan came on for the 20th over. Yorkshire 105 for 2 off 20 overs. Martindale bowled a maiden the following over. Bennison, who was schooled at the nearby St Peter’s School, got to his 50 off 69 balls with a lofted mid-wicket four off Martindale in the 25th over. Hutton (6-0-39-0) replaced Martindale (4.2-1-29-0) for the 29th over. He went for seven runs and never bowled again in the innings. Wharton (44) attempting a scoop shot top edged Farhan into Verreynne's gloves; 159 for 3 in the 30th over. The third wicket stand of 116 in 22.2 overs had put the home team in the ascendancy.

McCann came on for the 31st over – Hameed electing for an all-spin attack which enabled the scoring rate to begin to slow down. Bennison hit Farhan for a six over long off – but only eight off the 32^nd over. Stone came back for the 35th over with McCann switching ends and had Bennison dropped at mid-off low down by Hutton. Hameed forever switching his bowlers elected to bring back Pennington for the 38th and he dismissed Bennison (91 off 115 balls, 11x4, 2x6) who skied him to Farhan at mid-on, 194 for 4 in the 38th over. It was Bennison’s highest score for Yorkshire. Hill (6) was caught low at cover by Martindale off Stone; 207 for 5 off 39 overs. Yorkshire 212 for 5 off 40 overs completely lost their way in the last ten overs adding only 70 runs with Notts replicating their Oval bowling fightback.

McCann came back for the 41st over and went for seven. Farhan and McCann went for five singles in the 42nd and 43rd overs respectively. Bean (10) was caught on the mid wicket ropes by McCann off Farhan (10 0 44 2),  234 for 6 in the 44th over. McCann’s (6 0 30 0) last over of the match went for six. Pennington came back for the 46th over and bowled Whiteman (39). The Doncaster-born left-hander who was brought up in Western Australia was attempting a ramp shot, 241 for 7. Stone went for six singles in the 47th over. Yorkshire skipper Bess hit Pennington for four through mid-off and then for a six over square leg, 15 off the 48th over. A perfect yorker from Stone (9-0-58-2) bowled Bess (21); 263 for 8, five off the 49th over. Pennington (10-2-49-4), Notts’ best bowler yesterday, bowled the last over and went for four plus a bye. Off the last ball, Coad played the ball in the air in to the fumbling Hutton at deep extra cover, McCann came to his aid and threw the ball back to Pennington who ran Coad (9) out as he attempted a third run. Yorkshire, finishing with a competitive 273 for 9 off 50 overs – Cliff 5 not out. Less though than they had expected when Bennison and Wharton were hitting the Notts bowlers to all parts.

Coad (City End) went for 1 off the first over. Martindale was dropped on 1 by White, off his initial delivery, a caught and bowled chance struck hard and low. He immediately went off to get his stinging, bleeding hand repaired.  Hill completed the over and had Martindale (1) caught behind by Bean with his fourth ball. The left-hander getting the thinnest of edges; 1 for 1. McCann fell for an 8-ball duck caught behind by Bean off Coad, 1 for 2 in the 3rd over. Hameed fell first ball caught by Bean off a Coad delivery that moved away; 1 for 3. The crowd was very animated and rhythmically clapped as the in-form Verreynne coming in ahead of Haynes, confidently batted away the hat trick ball. Notts well and truly on the ropes.

Munsey and Verreynne added 54 in 9.4 overs for the fourth wicket. 

Verreynne hit Hill for consecutive fours in the 7th over. Hill went for 13 off the following over, two boundaries for Munsey and one for Verreynne. Cliff came on for the 10th over. Notts 43 for 3 off 10 overs.

White came back on the field and immediately bowled the 11th over. Munsey (25) became the fourth Notts batsman to be caught behind this time off White; 55 for 4 in the 13th over. With Notts having a long tail and with James’ fitness unknown the home crowd was now extremely confident and there was continuous banter about buying tickets for tomorrow’s semi at Leicester. Notts though never give up and Verreynne and Haynes were to silence them batting for 28.4 overs whilst adding 154 runs. Initially they laid down a platform dealing mainly in singles.

Bess came on for the 18th over – Notts 83-4 off 20 overs. Verreynne got to 50 off 65 balls with a four through third man off Bess. Another boundary followed next ball - 12 off the 22nd over. Notts got to 100 in the 23rd over with Hill returning. Notts 113 for 4 off 25 overs.

Bess and Coad came on for the 27th and 28th overs respectively. Notts 142 for 4 off 30 overs. Cliff returned for the 32^nd over, a cover driven four by Haynes brought up the 100 partnership. Another four meant Haynes reached his 50 off 52 balls, 12 off the over. The economical White (8.1-1-24-1) returned for the 33rd over and went for five. Bess came on for the 34th over. With Notts now ahead of the DLS par score. Lyth came on for the 37th over and Verreynne hit his first delivery for six over extra cover; 9 off the over. Next over, a single for Verreynne took him to a chanceless 100 off 113 balls. Lyth (2-0-17-0) bowled one more over. Notts 206 for 4 off 40 overs needing 68 in 10 overs. The crowd was now very quiet.

Notts were sitting pretty but lost three wickets for four runs in 12 balls as the game once again turned on its head. Coad returned for the 41st over and dismissed Verreynne (105 off 123 balls, 12x4, 1x6) caught at mid-off by the leaping Bennison; 209 for 5 off 41 overs. Verreynne has had an outstanding Metro Bank competition with 548 runs @91.33 and with a strike rate of 91.18, - only Keaton Jennings (580 runs) and Noah Thain (571 runs) are above him in the leading run scorers - it was his fifth List A ton but his first for Notts. 

With James indisposed Farhan came in at number 7. Notts got four off the 42nd over bowled by Hill – Haynes was nearly run out following a mis communication with Farhan.  Coad bowled the 43rd over and took two wickets in three balls and only conceded a single. Farhan (2) only lasted seven balls before he was caught at mid-wicket by Bess off Coad; 213 for 6 in the 43rd over. Stone (0) lasted two balls being bowled by Coad – who had gone nap; 213 for 7. Hill conceded six off the 44th over. Yorkshire were now favourites with Notts needing 54 off 6 overs and The Tykes now with their tails up.

It was death and glory time with Bess (10-0-68-0) coming back into the attack. Haynes hit him for an aerial four through extra cover and then ran a single. Haynes hit the fifth ball for six over mid-wicket; 13 off the 45th over. Cliff bowled over number 46 and conceded three and a leg bye. Notts needed 37 off 4 overs.

Coad (10-1-52-5) bowled the next over, Pennington smashing him for a six over long on then ran a single. The third delivery was hit for 4 aerially by Haynes over mid-wicket. Haynes hit the last ball for four towards extra cover to bring up his ton off 93 balls, 17 off the match-turning over. 

Twenty needed off three overs. Off the fifth ball Haynes hit Hill (8.5-0-60-1) for a six over square leg, 12 off the 48th over. Notts nearly home.

Off the first ball of the 49th over, Haynes edged Cliff (9.4 0 52 0) to the fine leg ropes. He ran a two of the second delivery and then a single off ball three. It was Pennington (22 not out) who delivered the coup de grace with a four through the covers. Notts 277 for 7 off 48.4 overs had won a breathless ebb-and-flow encounter with eight balls to spare. Another memorable victory for the small Notts travelling contingent to savour. Haynes, without cricket for a month, had made a spectacular comeback with 116 not out off 99 balls (12x4, 2x6). The unbroken 35-ball eighth wicket partnership had added 64 runs with Pennington well and truly playing his part.

Next stop Leicester tomorrow. The Foxes are well rested having not played since last Sunday. Patterson-White, who played at Farington, is now available with the sun setting on his Hundred franchise last night. MAG

This game is not being hosted at Headingley owing to a Test Match later this month, but in spirit of the Metro Bank Cup the game is being taken to the York Sports Club venue in Rawcliffe on Skipton Road which is just beyond Clifton without as you leave the walled city from Bootham Bar on the A19.
