Notts must feel somewhat short-changed with HG. The purpose of the white ball contract was extend his career and bring extra trophies to Notts. No one can foresee injuries occurring but the limiting of your staff's availability to just a few games a year has backfired on this occasion.
ReplyDeleteWe won the Blast last year without him! You can draw your own conclusion of the true impact of his retirement.
You can only hope the white ball policy is more beneficial in the case of Samit Patel as I can't see any positives from the Alex Hales deal, for Alex or for Notts.
Youth it appears in 2021, is the way forward for Notts, long may it reign.
Harry was obviously been suffering with this injury for some considerable time .
ReplyDeleteIt is therefore baffling why the club gave him another contract, until it was proved one or another, whether he would be able to continue to play any cricket. Let us hope there is an insurance policy in place to recoup the outlay of his considerable salary.
As I recall he was signed to replace the departing Ryan Sidebottom.
ReplyDeleteFor an out and out number eleven, who was not renowned for either his fielding or batting skills , he can be proud of his achievements in all formats for Notts. He was capable at times, of bowling some lively deliveries, and gained a reputation for his " death bowling skills" in the white ball stuff.
It is a shame for him to have to retire earlier than planned, but hopefully his entrepreneurial abiity will stand him in good stead for the future
Agreed Mark, Shame HG had to retire but you did get the feeling that he probably only had a couple of more seasons in him given his flourishing business
ReplyDeleteHope it goes really well for you Harry, You certainly entertained us especially with your death bowling, Maybe we won't mention your batting and fielding skills,But you always tried your best You cannot ask for more.
His batting was ... entertaining. Slightly better than Chris Martin, maybe?
ReplyDeleteI do remember the QF against Somerset in T20 in 2018 at Taunton when Gurney was harshly called for beamers twice by an umpire with Somerset connections and ordered out of the attack, which cost us the match.
ReplyDeleteAlthough never as effective as Sid, he had a great "shape" on his out- swinger and could suddenly make the ball jag back.
ReplyDeleteSometimes he seemed to loose his rythem and stray leg side.
But he gave us a decade of mostly excellent bowling and I am sure we wish him well in every way.
