Seconds v Derbyshire 2s SEC at County Ground Win

Day 4

Notts made it three games unbeaten in the Second XI Championship with a comprehensive victory over Derbyshire at the Incora County Ground.

On a rare clear day in the East Midlands, the bowlers shared wickets in flurries before and after the lunch interval, before Matthew Montgomery and Ben Compton made light work of the 50-run target.

Resuming with Derbyshire none for three, Peter Trego (3 for 8) snared the Green and Golds’ fourth wicket in the first over of the day with Nick Potts feathering through to Dane Schadendorf behind the stumps.

After a period of relative calm, Trego got his second of the morning in the 14th over, Mattie McKiernan departing the same way to leave the hosts 17 for five.

Zak Chappell (2 for 11) bowled with equal zeal in the opening overs, but it was Joey Evison (1 for 19) who got the next breakthrough after Oskar Kolk and Anuj Dal had doubled the score. The 19-year-old also used the still-fresh ball to good effect, shaping away from Kolk who edged to Ben Compton at second slip.

Dal looked comfortable at the crease despite wickets falling at the other end and rotated the strike well as he passed his half-century with Nils Priestly for company. The pair put on an unbeaten 72 before lunch, and diminished the Nottinghamshire lead with 68 overs left in the day.

With the game in the balance, Dal and Preistly pressed on after lunch but, in the 40th over, Pettman (1 for 33) struck for his first of the game. The right hander drew some bounce from the pitch and Dal was only able to fend to Calvin Harrison at third slip.

It proved to be the beginning of the end for Derbyshire and a 19 run partnership ended when Harrison (2-14) pinned Ben Hutchinson in front for six to leave the home side 147 for eight.

The final two wickets fell with only five more added to the score. Harrison claimed his second when Priestley struck a short ball straight to Evison at midwicket, before Trego got a finger on a straight drive to leave Caton short of his ground.

Compton (19*) and Montgomery (27*) made light work of the target in reply, the latter hitting an array of lavish drives to the boundary in the opening overs before the former finished the job with consecutive fours of his own.

Day 3

Peter Trego and Ben Compton scored half-centuries before Nottinghamshire took pivotal late wickets on a rain hampered day three against Derbyshire at The Incora County Ground.

Three wickets for no runs in the closing overs of the day crowned a terrific day for the visitors, who amassed a 103-run lead, in large thanks to a 90-run partnership between Trego and Compton, and a Brett Hutton cameo.

The sides had to wait until 13:10 for play to begin, with 80 overs scheduled.

Resuming the innings on 35 for none, Matthew Montgomery (28) was only able to last four overs before chopping Geroge Scrimshaw onto the stumps attempting to punch off the back foot.

It brought Joey Evison to the crease and, with Ben Compton, Notts continued to bat in confident fashion, both players punishing the loose ball in an effort to reduce the deficit.

Their partnership was cut short, though, when Evison (23) drove at a wide Ben Aitchison delivery, edging through to Mattie McKiernan at third slip to leave the visitors 91 for two.

Derbyshire were celebrating again five overs later, Sol Budinger unable to continue his scintillating form.

Peter Trego offered his experience to prevent any semblance of a collapse. Compton looked in good touch as he tucked to the leg side to bring up his half century, and the pair accumulated steadily to see the Green and Golds through to tea at 137 for three.

After the interval, both continued to accelerate and Trego brought up his own half-century with an expansive drive through the covers for fours, a hallmark of Notts’ positive intent.

An over later he was gone, though. After hitting consecutive fours off leg-spinner McKiernan, the captain looked to go aerial but couldn’t clear Anuj Dal at wide mid-on, dismissed for an industrious 60 from 74 balls.

Compton went an over later, feathering a top edge through to Caton for 67 to give Aitchison his third and leave Nottinghamshire 199 for five.

Dane Schadendorf and the returning Brett Hutton made hay at the crease as Notts passed Derbyshire’s total, adding 41 before the former was caught by Scrimshaw at mid-off, off the bowling of McKiernan.

Another wicket then fell two balls later, Zak Chappell edging to Aitchison who caught well down to his left at first slip.

With 29 overs still left in the day, Hutton and new man Calvin Harrison had ample time to add to the score. Both were watchful but pounced on width to extend the lead.

Harrison was finally dismissed with 13.2 overs left, the right hander miscuing a pull shot to Tom Wood at mid-off for 29, and Hutton (43) fell soon after when his slog sweep could only find the hands of Nick Potts, prompting a declaration which left Notts three overs to bowl.

The decision could scarcely have turned out better for the Green and Golds when Chappell, in the opening over, claimed scalps with his fifth and sixth balls, James Newby and Chris Benjamin both skittled without scoring.

Trego added to the delight in the next over when he trapped Tom Wood in front to leave the hosts reeling with no runs for the loss of three wickets, and a second Chappell maiden left the home side a hill to climb on an intriguing final day.

Day 2

Nottinghamshire made the most of what little play was possible on day two of their Second XI Championship fixture against Derbyshire, snaring seven quick fire wickets in a frantic morning session before closing with all ten wickets intact.

Derbyshire resumed tidily positioned on 176 for three, but Peter Trego and Zak Chappell wreaked havoc, taking three wickets apiece as Derbyshire were bundled out for 203, before Ben Compton and Matthew Montgomery batted nine overs to hoist the visitors to 35 at lunch, and ultimately, the end of the day’s play.

Chappell was the first to get in on the act, bringing one back into left-hander Nils Priestly to trap him leg before for two.

Eight overs later, he got his third and fourth wickets of the match in consecutive balls.

Jack Newby was the first to go when he edged thickly to Calvin Harrison at fourth slip for a well-made 66, before Harry Carton fell victim to an in-ducking delivery from the seamer, the ball sneaking through the right-hander’s bat and pad to rattle the off stump and leave the hosts 192 for six.

Despite resisting an immediate collapse, Derbyshire would lose another two wickets in consecutive deliveries at the hands of captain Trego six overs later.

The seasoned paceman swung one back into the pads of Ben Hutchinson who was pinned leg before for four, then used his guile to move one the other way from Ben Aitchison to induce an edge through to Dane Schadendorf first delivery.

Joey Evison got his first wicket an over later, that of George Scrimshaw who edged to Harrison, before Trego tied up the innings with his fourth wicket, getting one to rear off the pitch which Oskar Kolt (30) could only splice to Schadendorf, Derbyshire only able to add 27 for the final seven wickets.

Ben Compton and Matthew Montgomery looked assured in reply as the Green and Golds aimed to narrow Derbyshire’s lead, but, when lunch was called at 13:12, the rain settled and play was ended for the day.

Derbyshire resumed on day 2 only to be hurried out by Zak Chappell 4/32 and Peter Trego 4/19.

Derby 2s had capitulated from 172/2 to 203 all out.

Day 1

Nottinghamshire’s seamers shared the scalps on a rain-affected first day of their Second XI Championship encounter with Derbyshire at the Incora County Ground.

Peter Trego, Tom Barber and Zak Chappell took a wicket apiece as Derbyshire reached stumps on 176/3, having been inserted by their opponents.

Tom Wood, who opened the batting for the hosts in their recent County Championship defeat to Notts, was first to fall as Trego found an impeccable line and length in his first spell.

Newby and Benjamin went on to compile a 70-run stand for the second wicket before the latter was removed, offering no shot to a Tom Barber delivery that arrowed onto the right-hander’s pads.

And Barber also triggered the end of Newby’s innings, hitting the southpaw on the hand as he attempted to fend off the paceman.

Newby’s retirement on 53 brought Mattie McKiernan to the crease, with the right-hander compiling a brisk 38 before chopping Zak Chappell onto his stumps.

That left Oskar Kolk and Nils Priestly to negotiate the remainder of a day which was interrupted no fewer than four times by rain or bad light.

Rain and poor light made interruptions though-out the day meaning just 50.5 overs were possible.

Inserted by Peter Trego, Derbyshire reached 176/3, Western Province's Jack Newby top scoring with 53 Retired Out, a wicket apiece for Barber and Chappell. Brett Hutton included in the eleven, did not bowl.
