Notts Championship Results 2023

c/oMAG

To summarise:

  • Hammered three, on those occasions, sub-standard teams.
  • Scraped one win at the end.
  • Outclassed by the best bowling county, twice!
  • Got hammered once
  • Dug-in, battled and clung on for draws in three or four games
  • Gifted a win to another county
  • Only played the top three counties in a total of four matches but
  • Best display was against the champion county.
  • Worse display was against a side that finished below us in the table.

Did the season pivot on one on two events?

  • When Tom Moores got injured, Joe Clarke took responsibility for keeping wicket, but his new found responsible attitude then became extended to his batting, Joe being instrumental in some of the best battling, rearguard displays of this season.
  • After the "gifting" of a win to Middlesex at Lord's, was the vociferous response by supporters partially the spur that those managing the side (on and off the field) needed, as there was no repeat and there was a number of battling displays that followed. The only major blot was the limp performance at Taunton.
Notts were never going to challenge the top counties but with the inclusion of an overseas International batsman for a few games, did show what might become possible in the near future. Too many batsmen never found any reliable form in 2023. Should the club employ a batting coach, starting this winter?

In 2023 we were too dependent on Brett Hutton and Dane Paterson, as terrific as they were, we need less crocks in 2024 to back them up.

  1. 80 NOT OUT
All in all it was a very messy season in every way for NOTTS .
The fragmented run of different types of matches at bizarre times of the month must play havoc with any plans that are formulated at seasons start . No one knows where they are anymore.
Hard for Players , Coaches and Spectators and Groundstaff

  2. Great relief at staying up, but in all competitions, this was a disappointing season, compared to 2921 and 2022.
A few did well, but many players went backwards performance wise, Why ?

  3. Controversial opinion - I don't think we've been as bad as some haave constantly suggested, we would have been relegated if that was the case but let's be totally honest, we're a million miles away from the likes of Surrey, Essex and Hampshire, can't see us winning the Championship or being in reallistic contention anytime soon.

  4. We’ve been an average red ball side for some years now -I’m not accepting that truncated season in 2021 only a full season of games really count IMO
The white ball success we had, untill recently anyway, always put a slant on the overall season I would say ?
Just reading now that Captain 👩‍✈️ Mull has stepped down, I assumed he would see out his final year of his current contract then hop into some coaching role somewhere ?
Team selection will now be interesting next year. Will Mull lose his place in the team as I don’t think you can play both him and Lyndon James in the same 11 as they both have similar roles in the team
I’ve said before, what a huge bonus it was to have Samit Patel doing the lone spinners job who also was a top6 batsman as it freed up another position. We don’t have this luxury now as well as a keeper/batsman of Chris Read’s quality who was like having another all-rounder in the side batting 7
