Membership Matters - Members' Forum II 2026 - Pravda Summary

17/09

Pravda:

Nottinghamshire hosted its final members’ forum of the season on the opening day of the county’s First-Class fixture with Hampshire.

Over 100 members were in attendance as Chair Andy Hunt, Interim Chief Executive Michael Temple, Director of Cricket Mick Newell and Head Coach Peter Moores took questions from the audience.

Topics raised includes the challenges of producing a balanced schedule across all formats of the game, the use of outgrounds, player recruitment, use of proceeds from the sale of a stake in Trent Rockets and the evolving relationship between the Rockets and the county club.

“I really enjoyed the chance to candidly discuss such a range of topics with those who joined us for the forum,” said Nottinghamshire’s Interim Chief Executive Michael Temple.

“With our professional teams enjoying such strong seasons, our Pavilion development nearing its conclusion and the Men’s Ashes returning next summer, this is one of the most exciting periods in our club’s long history.

“It means a lot to us that we have such an engaged, passionate membership base alongside us as we celebrate those successes and continue to move forward as a club.”

Members heard that The Clubhouse, in the Derek Randall Suite, would remain available as a members’ facility following the completion of the Pavilion, subject to availability.

Those in attendance were also reminded of the ongoing consultation process regarding proposed changes to the constitution, which are designed to ensure the club remains a thriving members’ club which is successful on and off the field.

Following an informal members’ event on Friday 4 September, an identical roundtable event will take place on Friday 25 September, giving members the opportunity to discuss their thoughts with the Committee’s Governance Working Group and executive staff.

This will be followed by a series of focus groups at which the terms of reference for a proposed members’ committee will be discussed.

Members can register for all of the above events, and find out more about the governance proposals, at trentbridge.co.uk/governance

Today's forum was a bit of a love-in again.

Questions on the consititutional changes were discouraged, but a bespoke forum on this topic would be timetabled for during the winter.

Lady Bay will received some ring-fenced, railguarded funding from the ECB's Notts Hundred account. Plans to follow once discussions have been had with partners.

The wet ground delay verses Leicestershire: a pity the excuses given by MN and PM didn't match up, but PM's explanation that the super-soaker was broken to be more probable as ground staff were squeegeeing the effected area at the time.

Remember this?

Members are being invited to register to attend an informal meeting in the coming weeks, where they can discuss the plans with Chair Andy Hunt, Interim Chief Executive Michael Temple and members of the Committee's Governance Working Group.

The first of these was held today in Hadlee Hall, and what complete waste of time it was too. In short today [ where a few committee members and their allies]was testing the water as to what members' fears were [about the proposed changes and motivation for further changes] - no answers were provided to any questions!

There might be a backlash on Tuesday, we will see!

Pravda:

A members' forum will take place at Trent Bridge on Tuesday 8 September – day one of the Rothesay County Championship fixture against Hampshire.

Members will be able to put their questions to the panel – including Chair Andy Hunt, Interim Chief Executive Michael Temple, Director of Cricket Mick Newell and Head Coach Peter Moores – during the lunch interval, which is scheduled to commence at 12.30pm.

With the Derek Randall Suite being used as a facility for members this summer, the Hadlee Hall, on the second floor of the Radcliffe Road Stand, will play host to the event.

There is no requirement to book, or submit questions, in advance.

10k Ashes tickets sold so far for days 1 and 2 of the Ashes Trent Bridge Test 2027, which equates to 2500 members for 2027 (probably).

Closed meetings - where's the clarity and the openness?

On Pravda:

Nottinghamshire members are being invited to share their thoughts and help to design proposals to modernise the club’s General Committee.

Ahead of the release of a new ten-year strategy, the Committee are proposing some changes to the club’s Constitution to ensure that the club’s leadership provides the skills, experience and aptitude needed to succeed.

A key part of the proposals is retaining Nottinghamshire’s status as a thriving members’ club with deep roots in communities across the county.

The proposed changes include modifications to the makeup of the General Committee, along with the formation of a Members’ Committee to formalise and strengthen relationships between members and the club’s Committee and executive staff.

Background information on the proposed changes is available here…

Members are being invited to register to attend an informal meeting in the coming weeks, where they can discuss the plans with Chair Andy Hunt, Interim Chief Executive Michael Temple and members of the Committee's Governance Working Group.

These meetings will take place on Friday 4 September and Friday 25 September, during the lunch interval of Notts’ County Championship fixtures (scheduled for 12.30pm).

Members must register in advance if they would like to attend one of these meetings. Register your attendance here…

Members are also invited to attend a focus group to help determine the terms of reference for the proposed Members’ Committee. Those who are interested should register here, and the club will be in touch to confirm timings.

Whilst there has been a hiatus of meaningful cricket at Trent Bridge and a lack of any CEO leadership, someone has been plotting...

Who that is and how these proposals have been dreamed-up, isn't written down in any of the shared links [with members] from what I've found so far.

All just illusions of consultation?

All the proposed changes here

Just two polar opposite views included in the above link:

Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club are proposing a series of changes to the club’s Constitution (the Rules) to safeguard the club’s status as a thriving members’ club which is successful on and off the field.

1.3 Summary of Proposed Changes

At present, our decision-making body, the General Committee, is made up predominantly of elected members. This means that:For the majority of its members (8 out of 12) there is no rigorous selection process to ensure that we only recruit individuals with strong aptitude, appropriate experience and the desired skillsets to will ensure robust and balanced governance.
We are not able to ensure that the Committee is reflective of the diversity of our communities, and to benefit from the diversity of thought, ideas and experience that this would bring.

The main areas of change being explored are:Establishing a skills‑based Board of 10 non-executive directors (of which 8 will be appointed and 2 elected by members) plus the Chief Executive Officer;
Creating a new members’ committee which will be a formal part of our governance structure with direct links to our board.

Such change will require the approval of eligible members, in accordance with our Rules. Following consultation with members, a revised set of Rules will be proposed ahead of the next Annual General Meeting on 22 February 2027, upon which voting will be conducted in advance of the meeting.

So the whole ethos of these proposals is to help the members' club "thrive" by reducing those members' influence on the club's goverance and leadership even further.

With a General Committee already composed of 4 of 12 appointed members, we have seen the club distance itself from the club's core supporters, but now "they" want to increase this to 10 of 12.

How many jobs for their mates do "they" want?

Who are "they"? Surely not the existing GC, unless they feel that themselves are currently out of their depth and not up to the job. Turkeys rarely vote freely for Christmas but now "they" propose members do.

Do "they" in the future want Members or Season Card holders?

Do "they" want a members club or just the tax benefits of a members club?

Is it just about making more money?

Then to confuse the proposals, "they" have dreamed-up a Members' Committee

It's all too much change for me but I'm certain the members will get lost in the process as these proposals aren't for their benefit.

Just give us a Members' Forum [not one rushed during a lunch interval] and listen to those members for once.

  2. I think this is a very sad state of affairs.

We are told the proposal is being brought forward by "Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club"? What is that? According to the constitution, any proposals for amendments must be brought by a named nominee. So, I presume, these proposals come from the Chair himself?

The proposed changes directly challenge the concept of an elected committee running the club. They are fundamentally anti-democratic in nature.

Let's imagine the Prime Minister of the UK claiming, adopting the words, of the proposed amendments:

"For the majority of MPs there is no rigorous selection process to ensure that we only recruit individuals with strong aptitude, appropriate experience and the desired skillsets to will ensure robust and balanced governance."

"We are not able to ensure that the set of elected MPs in Parliament is reflective of the diversity of our communities, and to benefit from the diversity of thought, ideas and experience that this would bring."

..... and on this basis we are going to do away with democracy and appoint a government of chums and cronies.

  3. Four Legs Good, Two Legs Better

This change has been fomented by the ECB, which appears to hate this country, itself and above all, County Cricket Club members. It seems to regard the latter as largely, “male, stale and pale”.
The document appears AI-generated to the notion, “We want to be a PLC but need to disguise this from the members”.
It demonstrates a lack of the candour shown by Yorkshire CCC, which is calling overtly for abolition of its members and creation of a PLC.
NCCC started the gradual erosion of a Members’ role in 2019, when four of the previously 12 elected posts to the General Committee became appointed ones.
The current proposal reduces the number of elected members to the “Board” to two, with nine appointed.
The new “Members’ Committee” is a piece of Orwellian gaslighting/newspeak, minimising the role of members, not enhancing it.
Once again, the proposal will be voted on by members before the AGM, a denial of democracy and it will ultimately succeed, because the decision is ordained. The preceding meetings look like small group gatherings to control attendance and minimise dissent. There is no meeting of all members before voting occurs.
We can then look forward to more lashings of DIE, ESG, virtue signalling and suicidal empathy. I used to think that this was a Cricket Club.
If members are that unwanted, why not save time and adopt the Constitution of Trent Rockets, with which NCCC will ultimately amalgamate? One CEO cost could then be saved and the Central Committee could avoid being irritated by AGMs, EGMs and Members’ Fora.
A Members’ Club in Name Only.

The proposed changes = smoke and mirrors . Members views could become irrelevant quite quickly . Long term you just wonder what the actual objective is .
The game of cricket is moving so fast in all sorts of ways . It’s hard for the average old style cricket fan to take in .

    1. ...all the more reason for members to register for the forum on Friday and then turn up and listen to what the club says are the reasons for the proposed changes. Hopefully there will then be plenty of pertinent questions, the answers to which will help further grow our understanding of the issues and the possible ways forward.

  5. There is no merit to having a Members commi without any power. We need the right to have a vote in decision making, otherwise it's meaningless.

    1. Chesterfield did come up - "limited options within the county border" was the response but watch this space with regards to Lady Bay development! We're still waiting that news!!
